Jones,Cassidy Wright, and VillVright havebrought together their artwork and photographs to celebrate theecosystem of Fripp Island, and to honor its creatures. Each artist, photographer, and subject contributes to the visual dialogue atthematic intersections. \nWill has visited Fripp Island, off the coast of South Carolina, since he was a young boy. Before a bridge connecting the islandto the mainland was built,he took the ferry with his family andstayed in a rustic hotel. The undeveloped island seemed like ajungle to him,it was so wild. \nIVill introduced Joell to Fripp Island in 1981.She sketched itsenvironment and wildlife on their yearly visits, and in 1988 shebegan to turn her sketches into gouache paintings on ragboardpaper.Cassidy has been visiting the island with Will and Joellsince her birth in 1986.By the year 2000,Cassidy and Will hadbegun photographing the same subjects that Joell was paintingduring their retreats on the island. \nReviewing images, created from 1988 to 2004,the dilemma ofnature versus development began to concern Joell. She was espe-cially saddened by the disappearance of loggerhead turtles thatonce hatched along the beaches, and by the encroachment ofdevelopment on Mirror Lake.Combining their images,a visualcommentary began to emerge on the value of preserving naturalhabitats while encouraging public access. \nAs more people discover the beauty of Fripp, and other islandslike it,the natural habitat is displaced or altered-indeed trans-formed.Development occurs to accommodate public enjoyment:hotels, restaurants, golf courses, and shopping destinations cover \nSeed...1990 \nlarge areas of the land. This kind of development threatens richlydiverse ecosystems all over the world.Fripp Island stands as anexample of the delicate dance between indigenous species andtheir invading visitors. \nRather than searching for hard and fast answers to the prob-lems of habitat protection,Joell,Cassidy, and Will offer theirimages and musings as a stimulus for awareness. \nAs you turn the pages of this book,we hope that you will lookinto the corners of your own world to see where you are able tohonor both the harmony and turbulence of natural life, whilepursuing the pleasures and challenges of progress. \nRemembering to love and to cherish the natural world enablesus to take responsibility for its ultimate healch.
