Mining Modular Structure of Processes using Process LineDiagrams\n\nKarnika Shivhare¹,Rushikesh K.Joshi¹ \nIIndian Institute of Technology Bombay Mumbai,India 400076 \nAbstract \nProcess mining algorithms are unable to retain the modularity details of the processes, which are inherent as part ofimplementationsof process, but get missed out during mining. We propose to mine processes in form of Process Line Diagrams(PLDs)in order to retainmodularity as part of process mining itself. \nKeywords \nBusiness Processes,Process Line Diagrams (PLD),Process Mining,Petri Nets,Modular Process modelinglanguages such as BPMN [2],which are non-compact [3][4],complex [5][4],notational heavy [4],redundant [5][6]and ambiguous[7][8][9],and low-level mathematicalformalisms such as Petri Nets (PNs)[10]that lack commu-nications and interaction capabilities required for processes[1].It provides capabilities to capture modularity details ofprocesses. \nModularity of processes refers to inherent structuringof processes into logical modules or components.Existingprocess mining algorithms focus on extracting the execu-tional structures of processes from their trace logs.Thesealgorithms utilize different modeling approaches for rep-resentation of extracted processes. For example,BPMNminers[11],[12]mine BPMN[2],[13],Alpha miner andfamily [14][15][16][17],and Inductive Miners and varia-tions [18][19]mine PNs[10],Heuristics miner [20]minesHeuristics Nets[20],CPN Miner [21]mines Colored PetriNets [22],L*Process Miner [23]mines processes as finiteautomatons, and DFG Miners [24][25]mine Directly Fol-lows Graphs. However, these modeling algorithms do notextract modularity of processes.Interdependencies,interac-tions,and boundaries between process modules get missedduring the mining process, which may result in incompleteor inaccurate process models in this direction. This paperaddresses this critical gap by proposing to preserve processmodularity during mining itself. \nOur idea centers on the extraction of modular structuresfrom process trace sets, aiming to retain implementation-friendly modularity into the mining process. We utilizeProcess Line Diagrams (PLDs)as a means of capturing andvisualizing the modular structure of processes extractedfrom trace logs. \n## 2.An Exemplar Illustration\n\nWe consider an exemplar Petri Net(PN)shown in Figure2 to demonstrate step-wise construction of corresponding \nPLD.Considering the traceset T={a.c.t.x.z,a.c.t.y.z,a.c.L.Z.x,a.c.t.z.y,b.c.t.x.z,b.c.ty.z,b.c.t.zx,b.c.t.z.y,c.a.t.x.z,c.a.t.z.x, \nc.a.t.y.z,c.a.t.z.y,c.b.t.x.z,c.b.t.zx,c.b.t.y.z,c.b.t.z.y},we illus-trate mining of process using Figure 1,to obtain PLD shownin Figure 3.Process mining algorithms, such as alpha min-ing[14]are basedon footprint matrices and several typesof relations [26].Our approach generates XOR split,XORmerge,AND fork, and AND join relationships as demon-strated respectively using(1)through(4)for our exemplarPetri Net of Figure 2.The approach differs from the otherprocess mining algorithms in extraction and construction, because it directly extracts Process Line Diagrams for pro-cesses,rather than building PNs. \n(1) \nxor_split:{t'={x’,’y'},'start'={a,'b'}} \n(2) \nxor_merge:{t'={a’,\"b'}} \nand_fork:{t'={z'},{x,'y'},'start'={c'},{a','b'}}(3) \nand_join:{'t'={c'},{a','b'}} \n(4) \nAbsence of a transition in records of any of the relationships((1)through (4)can be assumed as an empty set for thattransition. It represents the state of transition being notinvolved in that relationship. For example, there are noXOR splits from transitions a,b,c,x,y and z in this example, and thus they do not hold their records in xor_split shownin(1). \nConstruction of a process line diagram for the processbegins with construction of a role from unnamed mark-ing point, start(hidden).Presence of
