not thegenerous alms gathered during the course of the HolyYear of 1450 that enabled Pope Nicholas V to pursue withgreater facility the quest, purchase, and transcription ofthose manuscript codices the collection of which was desti-ned to be the great achievement of his brilliant pontificate? \nNaturally this was not the first time that books werecollected on a large scale in the papal residence, because atall times the Popes needed documents, registers and codicesto discharge in an efficient manner the duties of their exaltedoffice.Even in times not greatly removed from those ofthe Apostles there was actually a rudimentary papal libraryat Rome. That being so,a bird's eye view of the inspiringhistory of this nineteen-hundred year old institution willhelp us to place in its proper perspective the admirablework accomplished by the great Humanist Pope Nicholas Vand to appreciate as well the far-seeing policy of the HolySee(the impulse of which was given by him)in regard tocollecting books and documents of all kinds the fate of whichwas intimately connected with the vicissitudes of the ChurchHerself;in the course of centuries periods of great prosperityalternated with times less favourable in which much of whatwas already collected was dispersed. For example, preciousprototypes of the New Testament, the letters and works ofthe Apostolic Fathers, early liturgical documents, calendars, \ndisciplinary canons, acts of the martyrs, annals of the popes, lists of clerics, lists containing the names of the poor ofRome and of those condemned ad metalla in the Islands whowere objects of papal charity, books and documents'suchas these gathered during the course of the first three centuriesof the Church’s existence in Rome disappeared during thelast terrible persecution(103-311)which expressly aimedat the confiscation and destruction of the libraries of theChurch. \nWhen peace finally came(313)and liberty was grantedto the Church, the number of documents and books pertain-ing to the Roman community became so large that PopeDamasus(366-384)was obliged to build the archivia;St.Jerome actually refers to the researches which could beundertaken at this period in the chartaceum Romanae ecclesiae.Documents can be quoted to prove that the Roman Chancerywas already in existence before the end of the century;herethe official documents or authentic copies of them wereconserved and put in order, year in year out;they werenumbered in continuation so as to facilitate consultation. However, the danger of invasion loomed nearer and nearer;when Rome finally fell to the barbarian hordes in 410,thedamage incurred by the Church was incalculable. It included, among other things, the loss of books and documentscollected in the preceding decades. In those barbaric timesthe Popes, helped in this respect by the last great Romans,Boethius,Cassiodorus,Benedict of Norcia, became the defen-ders of the Faith and of Latin civilization.Hilary I(461-468)built two libraries for the instruction of the Romans.Aga-pitus I(535-536)constructed another important one on theclivus Scauri. The unstable conditions caused by war pre-vented this Pope from realising the project
