The play was first staged by the English Stage Society on Sunday nights in 1965, later televised by the Stables Theatre Company for Granada Television, and then performed live at the Stables Theatre in Manchester. Granada Television, and was thenperformed live by them in the Stables Theatre in Man-chester.It has therefore undergone several changesapart from those common to most plays, especiallyearly ones,in their passage from desk to performance. The present version is a combination of the first stageversion, the television version, and one or two newbits.I hope it is the most satisfactory version so far.It requires either a composite set or no set at all forits performance. It might be worth mentioning that thelater parts of Scene Eight in Act Two between Janetand David can be performed as if walking down theschool corridors, the last part with Reg being done inReg's office. \nI should like to thank Gordon McDougall and the StablesTheatre Company for rescuing the play when all,in-cluding me,had forgotten it.But most of all I shouldlike to thank Donald Howarth for giving it not only itsfirst performance, but also more or less its first shape, carved from the flabby condition in which he found it.His production was a very happy one,and in gratitudeI would like to dedicate this version, still very closeto the one he largely helped construct,to him. \n1 \nx2 \nMiniatures was first performed
