The analysis shows G approaches zero as discoveries grow, handling special cases r=0 and 0\u003Cr\u003C1 and linking the long-run behavior to closing the explanatory gap.","Mind the gap  \nThe God of the Gaps is an argument that says if there are gaps in ourscientiﬁc knowledge about the universe, God must have did it & therefore God-or any supernatural entity for that matter-exists. Many has debunked this argument in creative ways I couldn't even have thought of on my own. Here I'd like to share a more mathematical perspective in debunking the God of the Gaps.  \nI had fun writing this one, so I hope you enjoy the read!  \n-TacticalWeeb  \nThe model  \nLet G be the \"God factor\" - i.e. how much role God, or any supernatural entity (for ease of reference, let's call this entity GG) has in ﬁlling in the gaps of scientiﬁc knowledge, where 0 ≤ G ≤ 1. When G = 0, GG ﬁlls no gap in our scientiﬁc knowledge. When G = 1, science explains nothing & GG explains everything. Let n be the number of scientiﬁc discoveries that contradict or invalidate GG-based explanations about our world.  \nA pattern I see is that with each discovery, scientiﬁc answers replace GGbased explanations. For example, in the bible God \"set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved\" ( Psalm 104:5) while we actually observe that the earth rotates. Or that lightning is Zeus smiting someplace, but we now know that it is a result of electrostatic difference between the clouds and wherever it strikes. As such, the God factor decreases, which can be illustrated with this pattern  \n1 , ~~ ~~12 , ~~ ~~14~~ ~~ , ~~ ~~18~~ ~~ , ~~ ~~116~~ ~~ , ~~ ~~132~~ ~~ , . . . ⇒ g(n) = ( ~~ ~~12~~ ~~ )n  \nIn the pattern above, each discovery halves the God factor. With each discovery, it becomes more difﬁcult to chip off a lot of God factor, which makes sense. As science answers more questions about our world, the next question will be more difﬁcult to research. I admit that halving the God factor with each discovery is dramatic, but it's good enough for demonstration purposes.  \nLet's generalize this model further for any rate of replacement.  \ng (n) = ( ~~ ~~12~~ ~~ )n = e ln( ~~ 1~~2~~ ~~ ) ⋅ n  \nThe number ~~ 1~~2 here represents how much God factor is carried over to the next God factor as n grows. Let r be how much of God factor is chipped off per discovery such that the God factor that's carried over is 1 − r. For example, if we have r = 0.01, 1% of the current God factor is chipped off while 99% of the previous God factor is carried over to the next. Therefore, the ﬁ nal model is  \nG (n) = exp(ln(1 − r) ⋅ n)  \nwhere:  \nן . G is the God factor function with range [0, 1] .  \nנ . r is an arbitrary constant representing what fraction of G is chipped off per discovery with range [0, 1) .  \nס . n is any non-negative integer that represents the number of scientiﬁc discoveries.  \nHere is why the function is bounded as such:  \nן . ln(x) has domain x > 0, so r ≥ 1 is invalid.  \nנ . Since the value of G is bounded to interval [0, 1], if we have r \u003C 0, the value of G > 1 for n > 0, which is outside the interval of G.  \nס . The variable n here represents the total number of discoveries, which is countable. So naturally, n ∈ N.  \nTo infinity (but not beyond)  \nAs the number of scientiﬁc discoveries grow over time, we can see the long term behavior of the God factor by taking the limit  \nlim G = lim exp(ln(1 − r) ⋅ n)  \nn→∞ n→∞  \nWe can't directly evaluate this limit, but let's look at it another way. Here we have a graph of y = ln(x) .  \nNotice how ln(1) = 0 and for 0 \u003C x \u003C 1 , ln(x) \u003C 0- in other words, a negative real number. From here, we can neatly divide the problem into two different subcases based on the value of r.  \nCase r = 0  \nIn this case, ln(1 − r) = ln(1) which gives us just 0 as shown in the graph above.
