continue to disavow any effort to systematizeErickson's material in these volumes,we have made a carefuleffort to catalogue the subject matter in two ways.First we haveprovided frequent headings which appear on every page or two tofocus attention on the major theme that Erickson is presenting.These headings are the editors'efforts to catalogue—not Erickson's.The contents in these headings are then used to select key subjectwords for the index.The index is thus the key to the subject matter inthese volumes,and can serve as a reference tool for future scholars.  \n## Regarding the Typesetting\n\nTo indicate Erickson's frequent shifts of attention during dem-onstrations from subjects to audience and back to subjects,allverbatim trance material spoken directly to subjects is in bold facetype.His shifts of focus back to the audience are indicated byadditional spacing and regular(Roman)type.It should be noted,however,that although addressing the audience,many ofErickson's
