He has been a hero and role model tome and to generations of others, not only because of his bold and groundbreaking scientific career but also for his advocacy and mentorship to countless young scholars, scientists and emerging leaders—part of his extraordinary work to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in the STEM disciplines. When I met Dr. West, I was a graduate student at UC Berkeley, and it didn’t take me long to understand the critical role he was playing in the field of engineering. He was a dynamic and prolific innovator in the lab, and he was also systematically breaking down the doors that had previously been closed to himself and other underrepresented scholars and scientists. He writes,“I can look back now and be very proud of having participated in programs that aim to encourage women and underrepresented minority students to move into STEM careers along the entire pipeline length, from kindergarten through high school and college… For me, it is about exposure to the whole area of engineering, chemistry, mathematics, and sciences that may interest these kids. My parents, Warren and Gloria May, were of a generation that grew up having to sit at the back of the bus. They both went to all-Black public high schools, but in the 1950s, as civil rights efforts were beginning to breakdown the system of racial segregation, my mom was one of nine Black students to integrate the University of Missouri.
