\nBuilding on the role play settings used within the new qualification, this resource provides teachers with ideas of real and relevant scenarios they could play out in the classroom. \nAlmost two-thirds of learners1 believe that knowing a language will be important to society within the next two decades, so when it comes to learning a new language, it’s crucial that the vocabulary our students learn extends beyond textbooks. \nWe know that children are more motivated to learn a language when the content is real and relevant to their lives2 . So, when developing our new specification, we made sure to include content that reflects real life situations, both now and in the future. \nPractical vocabulary empowers students to navigate everyday interactions. To get you started, we’ve identified a selection of relatable scenarios your students may encounter. \nFrom important interactions such as requesting medical help, to social situations with friends, these activities have been designed to offer conversations that students can relate to, and easily immerse themselves in. \nBy focusing on relevant vocabulary, we’re not just teaching words – we’re equipping them with the tools and confidence to thrive in the real world. \nTaking the studentcentred approach \nreal and relatable role play scenarios \nBonjour, Croissants! \nStudents are encouraged to role play an interaction at a bakery—practise greetings, ask about different pastries, describe their preferences (“J’aimerais un croissant au beurre, s’il vous plaît”—I would like a butter croissant, please), and ask prices. \n2 \nIt’s time to order! \nIn this activity, students are encouraged to create a role play scenario in their chosen language, where one student plays a waiter, and the rest of the students play a group of tourists out for dinner. \nThis scenario can cover ordering food, what specials are on offer today, if the group enjoyed their food, if they want to pay the bill and a recommendation on what to do on therest of their trip. \nShop talk \nFor this activity, students are encouraged to set up a mock shop with various items labelled in the target language. In groups of two or three, students can practise greetings, ask for specific items, compare prices, and make purchases. \nThis can be expanded upon with students asking for advice around what to buy, and what other shops they could visit. \nLet’s talk about travel plans! \nIn groups of your preferred size, students can recreate a group of friends discussing travel plans, with each student outlining a trip around a chosen country, in their chosen language. \nThis canto do in they are \nthey are \nexplore modes of transport, what each location, how much money willing to spend, and what food excited to eat. \nSuggested activities \nWelcome, Neighbour! \nStudents are paired up and encouraged to role play as a person moving into their new house, and their neighbour who has lived in the town / city / setting for a long time. This activity will allow students to explore giving recommendations, asking for directions, discovering what to do around the town, with specific local examples, such as‘Maria sells the best apples’. \nCould you help me? \nThis activity would see students practising phrases in a chosen language, to ask for help with a minor travel emergency. They can explain problems, such as ‘I’ve lost my phone’or ‘I’ve taken the wrong train!’, ask for help and express thanks for assistance. \nWould you like anything from the shop? \nIn this scenario, students will be asking eachother in their chosen language if they would mind getting them a few things from the shop. This can be a fun exercise as students can return with wrong items or tell their partner that they are asking them to get too many items, or playfully asking them to go instead. \nIn working on this activity, students can reinforce knowledge of simple item names, interactions and how to be friendly and helpful. \nI need a doctor! \nThis activity could r","cbCaijEZ2DUpMge8","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijEZ2DUpMge8","pdf",1878445,"English","# Taking the student-centred approach\n## Real and relatable role play scenarios\n## Suggested activities","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of this role play scenarios resource?\",\"answer\":\"To provide teachers with ideas for real, relevant scenarios that can be played out in the classroom, supporting practical vocabulary and confidence in the target language.\"},{\"question\":\"What kinds of role play activities are included?\",\"answer\":\"The resource includes scenarios such as ordering at a bakery, creating dinner plans for tourists, practising in a mock shop, discussing travel plans, asking for help during travel emergencies, requesting shop items, and role playing a doctor’s surgery visit.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the resource support student engagement and learning goals?\",\"answer\":\"It focuses on vocabulary connected to real life situations, encouraging immersive conversations and motivating children to learn language content that extends beyond textbooks.\"}]","MFL GCSE Role Play Scenarios Resource - Suggested Teacher Activities | PDF",1792473503]
