Invention\n\nMethod of producing carbon fibers. \n## 2.Scope of Patent Claim\n\n(1)A method of producing carbon fibers in which opticallyanisotropic pitch is melt spun followed by non-fusion treatmentand carbonization or graphitization treatment, said methodcharacterized by enlarging the channel of molten pitch beforedischarge. \n(2)A method of producing carbon fibers of Claim l in whichthe channel of molten pitch, which had been enlarged,is reducedagain. \n## 3.Detailed Description of the Invention\n\nThis invention concerns a method of producing carbon fibersfrom pitch with high performance. Specifically,it concerns amethod of producing pitch-based carbon fibers with high strengthand a high modulus of elasticity without surface rupture in whichthe optically anisotropic structure in the fibers exhibits aconcentric structure. \nOptically anisotropic pitch has been used in the past toform an oriented structure in carbon fibers in procedures usingpitch as the carbon fiber raw material, thereby producing fiberswith high performance. Moreover, carbon fibers produced fromoptically anisotropic pitch have advantages involving carbonfibers with a high modulus of elasticity since they exhibitbetter graphitization properties than PAN-based carbon fibers. However, the strength tends to be lower than that of PAN-basedcarbon fibers. \nThe optically anisotropic ingredient of pitch becomearranged in the fiber axial direction when melt spinning pitch, but there are three typical types of arrangements in the fiberprofile structure perpendicular to the fiber axis, the radialtype in which the ingredient is arranged in radial shape, theonion type in which it is arranged in concentric shape, and therandom type in which it is arranged irregularly. \nThe radial structure among the aforementioned three types ofpitch-based carbon fiber structures undergoes rupture duringcarbonization or graphitization in the direction in which thefiber surface lies along the fiber axis. This rupture sectionbecomes a defect and greatly impairs the fiber strength. \nConversely,fibers with a random structure are advantageousin terms of strength since they do not undergo the aforementionedrupture, but there are limits to the structural regularity.Specifically, carbon fibers with an onion structure with \narrangement of the carbon layers in concentric shape, identicallyto graphite whiskers,is best in terms of improving the strengthand modulus of elasticity. Such carbon fibers with an onionstructure can be produced through melt spinning, but oninonstructures are produced in conventional techniques only inmonofilament spinning under special conditions including hightemperature spinning, and stable production has not beenpossible. \nThe inventors have conducted various examinations concerningmethods of producing carbon fibers with an onion structure·andhave discovered that an onion structure can be stably produced bycontrolling the fluid behavior of optically anisotropic pitch. That discovery culminated in this invention. \nSpecifically,this invention concerns \n(1)a method of producing ","cbCaifQCtCE4mdFj","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifQCtCE4mdFj","pdf",825659,34,"English","# 1.
