work and best efforts will bring us successand will lead us to the great life we're convincedwe want.Yet from the time we are quite young,welong for something more than this world seems tooffer—often unable to name what that more mightbe.  \nHope may not be a smart strategy for successin business,but it is absolutely crucial when seek-ing agood life—one beftting the children of God.If we only conceive of hope as wishful thinking,planted in fragile human systems and structures,hope will remain elusive,unsustainable,and evenseemingly naive.  \nBut we see hope as something more.As a theo-logical virtue,hope comes from,disposes us toward,and ultimately leads us to God—our true heart'sdesire.Hope comes from God,but that doesn'tmean we don't have a role to play.We cooperatewith grace and cultivate hope first of all and bestof all in prayer  \nWe cling to hope when life brings struggles,when we're attacked by hope's enemies:presump-tion and despair.Presumption lulls us into passivityand tempts us to think we have already attainedour heart's desire.Despair tells us we will never getthere.Even when not under attack,hope requires  \npatience because it causes us to long for somethingwe do not yet possess.  \nThe Advent and Christmas seasons give usa perfect chance to cultivate and celebrate hope.Advent speaks powerfully into our longing forsomething more.We remember ancient Israel’scenturies-long desire for the Messiah who wouldtransform the life of their nation.They knew with-out God's radical action in human history theywould have no hope.Advent stirs in us a desireto prepare the way for Christ who breaks into ourlives each day and whose coming at the end of timewe eagerly await.We welcome the hopeful desiringof Advent when we sing what is likely the bestknown hymn of the season,“O Come,O ComeEmmanuel.\"  \nAt Christmas we celebrate God's fulfillment ofall his promises by sending his Son into the world.The message of Christmas is that God is with
