It distinguishes perceived offenses from real ones, explains how offense becomes a trap that fuels victimhood and blocks personal growth, and describes the resulting fruits such as hurt, resentment, and bitterness. dictionary defines an offense as “a breach of a \nlaw or rule;an illegal act.\"It also defines an offense \nas“an annoyance or resentment brought about by \na perceived insult to or disregard for oneself.” \nOffenses are inevitable. \nThere are two kinds of offenses:perceivedand real. Some offenses that we experience offendus based on our sensibilities, our past wounds, orour opinions. They offend us for sure, but no realharm or injury was intended. We may feel offendedbecause someone challenges our own self-image orperceived identity. The other person hit a nerve. For example,if you are a parent you may get veryeasily offended if a teacher, relative,or friend saysanything critical about your child.Whether theyare right or have a legitimate insight is irrelevant.Offense can be taken concerning our clothes orappearance, our height or weight, our position oraccomplishments. The list goes on and on.Mostof the time these offenses are unintended, but itwould be naive not to acknowledge other timeswhen the offense is quite deliberate, intended toinfict pain.Either way, offenses are inevitable, andthey hurt. \nEvery offense we experience is an opportunityfor us to step back and evaluate the offense. This isimportant because of the second major fact aboutoffenses:offenses are a trap. \nEvery offense is a trap that can impede us andkeep us from living up to our full potential.Didyou ever notice that an offended person lives witha huge sense of entitlement?Everyone owes himor her something. They are owed an apology orsome other kind of recompense, and they seem tobe waiting around for it.As a result, they get stuck. They spend too much time playing the victim andwaiting for others to fix the offense rather thanactually living their lives. \nWe can fall into that trap too.Living in offenseis a trap that will rob us of what God wants forus. The fruit of offense is hurt,outrage,jealou-sy,resentment,strife,bitterness,hatred,and envy. When we take offense and then hold it in ourhearts,we allow these toxins to grow within us.Ifwe make it a habit to internalize offenses and notdeal with them in a healthy way,we will becomeangry people. \nGod has a different vision for us.God wants usto live a life of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-con-trol.These are the fruits of living connected toGod's Holy Spirit(see Gal 5:22-23),and they arethe opposite of living offended. \nThis leads to a third fact about offenses:Wecan ch","cbCaiqN5ofm0nB9b","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqN5ofm0nB9b","pdf",1900247,68,"English","#
