Author37 \n8 \n100 \nSomewhere in the North Bronx,Late Seventies \non the top floor of a sinking two-story,a girl watches a game with her father, \nher sad-eyed,foul-mouthed,quick- \nto-anger father. The father loves \nthe quick bats and ugly spatsof these furious Yankees:hubris \nof Jackson bristling with everyswing, every hustle. The girl wants \nto go to that stadium, hear the solemnpublic address man boom her name, \ntell her story. The father eats handfulsof peanuts, leaves a dirty shell-pile \nat the girl's feet, commands herto pick up his leavings, voice terse \nas a strikeout. Her mother-his wife一works another double shift at Bellevue, \nmoney when money slides out ofthe father's hands into one failed \nmail-order business after another.Balls and strikes, hits and losses, \nthe girl knows them all, sweepsthe pile of leavings into her hands, \nfather's eyes making sure she'sswept it all up before he rips \nopen another paunchy bag, crackleof cellophane crunching between them. \nHer Chair \nMy mother must have been tiredof being mother, wife, some patient'snurse, tired of a house of dust \nand abandoned appliancesdrained of their usefulness,of house keys, doormats, \nthrobbing of my father's TV \nand ringing telephone, his primitiveremote slipping beneath easy \nchair cushions.Home from work, seeing spilled toys, clothes, books,my dolls with their dead faces, \nwhy was she never temptedto leave, seek quiet somewherebesides our crumbling house \nwith its falling kitchen tiles,gift-paper skeletons of pastChristmases, fossils of my father's \nhome improvements, his threadbareunderwear, soiled dress shirts, jeans?Home from the hospital wards, \nlong shifts of tending and mendingstrangers, didn't she have a rightto refuse us dinner, refuse us \neverything?But she came home, full grocery bags intact despiteher walk from the bus stop,","cbCaiuHgcwsK4IAz","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiuHgcwsK4IAz","pdf",1857629,46,"English","#
