What makes one story“better” than another one?  \nIsn’t it all subjective?  \nActually, it’s not.  \nNow that we have a sense of On the Surface, Beyond the Surface, Above the Surface, and Through the Surfaces as the mythic manifestation of the three in a single complex “throughline” action, what does all of that do for us? The trouble is that these notions are extraordinarily abstract. They’re certainly not common everyday language that all of us can get a grip on intuitively.  \nHere’s the good news.  \nThese ideas aren’t as difficult to understand as you might think. They are all expressed clearly in well-told stories. From The Matrix and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to Little Women and Breaking Bad, all of these ideas are superbly presented to us in a form we can all understand. They are all exciting, strangely familiar, confounding, and ultimately cathartic. We don’t have to know anything about On-the-Surface physical interaction, Beyond-the-Surface social communication, Above-the-Surface ideological interrogation, or Through-the-Surfaces archetypical manifestation.  \nThese stories just bring us a sense of deeply meaningful truth. Eventhough we also know they didn’t “really” happen.  \nWhat does this have to do with AI? A lot.  \nOne of the biggest technological debates today is all about when we’ll“know” that AI has crossed the threshold from being a very good predictor  \nof word sequences to a truly generally intelligent system. When will we know they’ve crossed the intelligence, rationality, reasoning, and wisdom thresholds?  \nThe short simple answer is that they will tell us a dynamic story, an original, genuine “category of one” story that we can relate to but have never heard told before.  \nThe long answer is that they’ll create an artifact that is a genuine and original instantiation of The One Complex Myth, what the philosopher Baruch Spinoza deemed as the truth as its own standard.
