physicians and nurses receive little educationregarding mental health (MH)during theirstandard training and it can be a daunting task towork with and understand patients with mentalillnesses. The purpose of this primer is to give afoundation of understanding of this field. We willfirst learn the basics of how to\"talk the talk\"ofmental health and then delve into the most oftenencountered mental health diseases and conditionsalong with the different modalities of treatmentincluding medications \nThe first point of entry for many people to a mentalhealth record is the psychiatric consultation.Oftenit is filled with psychiatric-specific terms and iseither skipped over by the reader or just the finalplan is read.As a young student nurse,in mypsychiatric rotation,I asked my instructorquestions regarding the diagnostic system used inthe psych consult.I was told to skip reading thepsych consult,\"It's too complicated. That’s just forpsychiatrists. You don't need to know that stuff.\"It's not too complicated, everyone can understand \nit,and we all benefit from knowing more about apatient's mental health. \nThe fundamental starting point for psychiatrists isthe Mental Status Exam(MSE).Similar to aReview of Systems (ROS)performed by our moremedically oriented providers, the MSE is theclinical snapshot of the patient's current state ofmind. The MSE is a standardized way of paintingthe psychiatric clinical picture,as we will see. \n# The DSM and the MultiaxialDiagnosis\n\nThe theoretical framework for mental healthpractice is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual(DSM).This massive tome was first published in1952 and listed about 60 different disorders. It hasbeen revised many times, every ten years or so.Thecurrent revision,DSM-5,was published in 2013 butmany clinicians continue to use the DSM-IV as thebasis of practice and many organizations have notupdated their internal documentation or electronicrecords. The main difference between the two isthe multi-axial diagnosis system which wasdiscontinued in the DSM-5. \nThe multiaxial diagnosis is a framework on
