addressthe co-occurring disabilities of fe-male offenders and to continuecommunity-carc after release. \nThe Maryland Mental HygieneAdministration began the Trauma,Addictions,Mental health,And Re-covey Project(TAMAR)project inrecogniuon that a gender-specificresponse was needed fur womenprisoners because they suffer frommentai disabilities a a significantlyLigher rate than maies. \nUnlike male offenders, thewomen have long hisiories oftrauma.More than half of the men-tally disabled suffered their firsttraumas or rapes as adolescents andthe abuse continued into their adultycars. \nFor the pilot, the agency's Divi-sion of Special Populations selectedone rural and two suburban coun-ties.Other counties joined the pro-gram when the pilot demonstratedpositive results. \nTAMAR's goal is to provide in-tegrated services for women whotypically have interrelated trauma, substance abuse and mental illness. \nThe program involves grouptherapy and creative expression. The women meet in groups to share \ntheir stories and to gain encourage-ment from others with similar ex-periences \nThe women are also encouragedte keep journals and paint or drawto free their internal anvieties,to re-lease anger and to overcome self-doubt that they had contributed totheir owa victimizaticn. \nAfter rclease, womcn centineto attcnd group meetings in theircommunity u maintain and rein-force the support system that theybuiit in the prison setting. \nThe Maryland project foundthat malc and female inmates mayhave similar mental illnesses andcustody levels, but their treatmentregimen, housing and programmingneeds are distinctly different. \nAt the start, the program identi-fied women who were victims ofpast abuse and offered interventionsthat meet their specific needs. \nThe program provides trainingthat helps correctional administra-tors and officers to understand thehigh prevalence of trauma historyamong the inmates as wellas the re-lationship between physical abuse, substance abuse, mental illness, andcriminal behavior. \nThe program also includes in-terventions that help inmates with \nhistories of abuse to better under-stand their own situations. \nMaryland officials said otherstates could replicate the program. \nThey point to Bureau of JusticeStatistics findings that histories oftrauma and abuse are particularlyhigh among females in prison andjail.More than 78 percent of femalestate prison inmates and more than72 percent of the female populationin jail reported such histories. \nInf.:Mental Hygiene Administration,Special Populations,410-724-3235. \n##
