has set an example in the conduct of his life,Ben-Gurion is certainly that person.He has lived his thoughts inhis day-to-day actions and he has devoted his entire existenceto a single end:the redemption of the Jewish people in theirancienthome ofIsrael.  \nNow that he can look back over sixty years in this countryand to a life of Jewish activism that encompasses eightdecades -four-fifths of a century!-the thoughts of Ben-Gurion must claim the attention ofall who have shared in theJewish experience.But though he takes theJews as his subjectin this book,he carries his wisdom to a plane of universality.Ben-Gurion likes to invoke the Prophet Isaiah who enjoinedthe Jews to be‘a light unto the nations'.Here,he himself haskept faith with this injunction.Any human being who hasreflected on the meaning ofhis days andonhuman existence ingeneral will find in this volume food for thought and forinspiration.  \nWhat strikes me about these meditations are their youthful-ness,the flexib.ity existence,far fromdulling the edge of a sharp perception,has endowed it with amellowness,a breadth of vision and a profundity that no onewho has lived less fully or less wisely could hope to attain.  \nBen-Gurion writes of Moses whom he calls by his Hebrewname of Moshe.He says that Moshe gave theJews a definitionof their mission,a reason for their presence as a people.Andhe adds that today,3,300 years later,this definition is asmeaningful as when first formulated.In other words,allthings in life change yet certain ideas and principles by thetruth they embody abide for alltime.  \nI think that what Ben-Gurion offers us in this study alsocontains elements ofenduring truth.It is not a difficult workto read or to understand.But it does reflect the sagacity of alife lived in dedication to an ideal by a man who is an activistin the strongest sense of the term and equally a thinker ofpenetration.I take great honour and pleasure in commendingthis volume both to aJewish and a general public
