several innovations: \nInsofar as they have been released for publication, this edition presents forthe first time all the scrolls of that remarkable sect of the Wilderness of Judeatogether;it is the fullest collection,to date,of the documents relating to thehistory and the customs of the sect. \nIt provides vocalization and punctuation of the texts —an obvious aid toreading and comprehension. The editor does not presume that his voocalisationnecessarily represents the original reading of the texts, but as far as possible, the matres lectionis,as found in the texts, have been his guide, and in followingthem he has deviated,on occasion, from traditional vocalization.Whilevocalization was added, the original matres lectionis have been retained;thusthe reader is in a position to interpret the reading according to his under-standing. \nThere is appended to the scrolls a glossary of terms and expressions peculiarto these texts;this in itself should be an aid to the reader. \nThe editor has not been carried away by his own attempts at clarification ofthe texts as to believe that his is the only correct version. He knows that errorswill be found in his reading, and that better suggestions and improvements willbe made. But the Sages have it that \"it is not incumbent upon you to completethe task”. \nThe above remarks, which I prefaced to my book“Edah Ve-Eduth”(ACommunity and Testimonies),Jerusalem,1952,apply equally well to thisedition, which is new in form and enriched by many scrolls and fragments ofscrolls.Of course, every new text brought new, often greater, difficulties.Onedisturbing factor was the printing of the book at a distance from the city ofthe editor's residence, always a difficulty when producing vocalized texts ofthis kind \nThe keys and glossaries to the linguistic peculiarities of these texts have beenpresented in concordance form;it is the nature of such expressions and usagesto illuminate and complement each other from their various contexts. \nIt is now some years that the Transjordan scrolls, both the complete andthe incomplete ones, have been published in driblets. In the meantime, aconsiderable literature has grown around these texts, some meritorious andsome of doubtful value;often writers merely repeat what they read elsewhere.\"Expert\"pronouncements still keep being published from time to time.Nowthere is yet no certain and absolute knowledge as to who the remarkableauthors of those scrolls were.My own opinion has been, and after increasedstudy and the handling of additional materials still is,that the members of thesect in the Judean Desert were Saducees. \nIn my notes at the end of the book I quote present additions andexpositions by various scholars, insofar as they have reached me and possessed,to my mind, some element of significance.During the three years that thisbook was in preparation I often came across things that I afterwards found \nin the studies of other scholars, and not always was I able to acknowledge this. \nIn this edition,as in my former work on the subject,I was helped bycolleagues and friends.Mr.Yehuda Ratzhabi read the first proof of theThanksgiving Psalms.Mr.J.M.Grintz read a proof of the Exposition of theProphecy of Habakkuk and the Manual of Discipline.Mr.Daniel Leibel readone proof of all
