Atthe beginning of Year 12, I felt I had very little creativity and motivation so coming up with an extravagant idea was bound to be difficult. I decided to stick to my strength, still life, and simply create a scene with objects around me. \nHow did your artwork evolve during the artmaking process? \nThe initial idea was to portray “declining health”. I wanted to create a collage of my medication, doctor’s appointments, blood tests and any symbolic idea that represented my current situation. After playing around with different elements, with some suggestions from those around me, I went with only using the pills and their packages. I tried a few different layouts, some chaotic and messy, and some neat and orderly. Finally, I chose the composition that we now know and love, the carefully articulated mess. \nWho had the greatest influence on your work and why? \nI was inspired by Lucy Culliton, an Australian artist whose compositions of different collections were spontaneous and chaotic, yet still balanced. We studied her during the Visual Arts Course, and I was intrigued by the way Culliton was able to make a spontaneous mess look completely calculated. \nDescribe your materials, techniques, and art making process? \nOil painting was the main medium offered tome during my ATAR course. I had practised and experimented in this medium and felt comfortable with it. \nWhat advice would you give Visual Art students who are keen to exhibit their work in Pulse? \nI have always found it difficult to maintain motivation when creating larger pieces. The external pressure of someone else having to like it and essentially “approve it” also doesn’t help. Unfortunately, high school is the perfect environment to nurture self-doubt and insecurity in one’s art. I would often find myself creating projects that I had no interest in because I knew it would easily get any art teacher’s approval, but I was never happy with the end result. It’s taken me a long time \nto realise that I produce the best work when I love what I’m making (surprising I know!) . During high school it’s not a bad idea to cater to the target audience, in order to secure that good mark, but outside of that people are going to be able to see the artist’s connection to the work, so it’s important to feel good about your ideas. \n“It’s taken me a long time to realise that I produce the best work when I love what I’m making.” \nFinnity McHoull Candy, Willetton Senior High School (02) \nMEET THE ARTIST \nFinnityMcHoull \nAbout the Arts \nWhy do you think art and creativity is important at times of uncertainty and change? \nBeing creative can be such a fun and relaxing way to express yourself, even when you’re unsure how you feel. It can take your mind off events that may be stressful. It’s something anyone is able to pick up because most people have a pen and some paper lying around. \nIn what way does the arts influence how you feel about yourself and how you connect with others? \nThanks to my mum, I have been making things and creating art ever since I can remember, soit’s always something I felt comfortable with. However, through the school system, I have learnt the hard way that not everyone is going to like the art you make. Teachers aren’t like parents who would proudly display scribbles on a fridge. Some won’t sugar coat criticism or even personal opinions, and for me that was very hard to deal with-whether these comments were about me or my peers’ works.
