Detroit college. Its 70-acre woodedcampus,at an expressway crossroads of the northwest city,is a hub of learning activity for adults of many ages, faiths and cultures.Founded in 1910,the college movedfrom its original rural location to the present campus in1927,as a direct response to educational needs amongthe people of Detroit. \nFifteen hundred students mingle daily intheir pursuit of graduate, undergraduate, and continuingeducation programs—that's an undergraduate studentto instructor ratio of 14 to 1.Far into the evening hours, classrooms, laboratories, studios,The Theatre andlibrary are alive with students. The Marygrove student is hard to define.Young men and women fresh from high school hold theirown in vigorous exchange with veterans, housewives, and paraprofessionals. These students do what all studentsdo-talk,listen,learn,argue and agree—but with it allthere is a camaraderie that the Marygrovecommunity claims as its own.Students are involved with the college. \nAbout 75 per cent of the undergraduates qualify for sometype of financial aid, whether state,federal,orcollege-sponsored.As a result, students share staffresponsibilities in most office andservice centers of the college.Because of the significance of the studentrole, nearly all committees of the college have studentmembership.Recommendations on college policyincreasingly reflect the vital interest of thestudent in his education. On the College Council, legislative bodyof the college, students, faculty, and administration haveequal voice through elected representatives. The councilitself evolved slowly from the efforts of all three groups andis helping to make decision-sharing a realityfor the Marygrove community. The Marygrove faculty complements itsstudents. Here, too,is an enriching mixture of men andwomen, laymen and IHM Sisters.Creative individualismgains added strength from common commitment to thecollege.Sixty-four per cent of the 53 faculty membershold doctorates or terminal degrees in their fields;mostare involved with some form of research related to theirwork. In casual and formal sessions, faculty trade view-points among themselves, with students and administrators, seeking improvements for learning. \nStudent-faculty relationships are positive, informal, but marked with mutual respect.Concern for the individual student provides majormotivation for faculty activities.Marygrove’s campus is an environmentfor learning.Whether the pace set be leisurely or intense, research and learning facilities are availablewhen they are needed. \nThe college library has a collection of153,466 volumes, subscribes to 980 current periodicalsand includes a center for media services.Researchlaboratories serve biology and chemistry;a clinicallaboratory provides on-site experience for students in theorthopedic physician's assistant program, prior to actualhospital experience.A Burroughs TC500 terminalcomputer laboratory is valuable for students and collegepersonnel alike.Photography and graphic arts studios serveall departments,as does the language laboratory. \nIn special education, highly developed \nclinic facilities provide experience in speech and hearingpathology, the emotionally disturbed and the mentallyretarded. The reading clinic serves the metropolitan areaas well as students of the college. \nThrough the International Room, theEthnic
