St John Ambulance Australia would like to thank Darryl Clare for his contribution to this topic. \nIntroduction ...............................................................................................................................................................4 \nMedical terms ...........................................................................................................................................................4 \nMedical abbreviations ........................................................................................................................................... 6 \nMedical Acronyms .................................................................................................................................................. 6 \nPronouncing medical terms ............................................................................................................................... 7 \nSystems of the Body.............................................................................................................................................. 9 \nLocation, Position and Motion Terms............................................................................................................ 9 \nMedical terminology is a vocabulary for accurately describing the human body and associated components, conditions, processes and process in a science-based manner. Medical terminology is used in the medical, nursing and pre hospital fields. \nIn medical terminology there is systematic approach to word building based on the concept of: \n􀁸 Word roots \n􀁸 Prefixes \n􀁸 Suffixes \n􀁸 Combining vowel \nWord roots \nWord roots; are derived from a source language such as Greek or Latin and usually describes a body part. \n􀁸 cardi – root for heart \n􀁸 hepat – root for liver \n􀁸 neur – root for nerve \n􀁸 nephr – root for kidney \n􀁸 cyt – root for cell \nPrefixes \nPrefixes can be added in front of the term to modify the word root by giving additional information about the location of an organ, the number of parts, or time involved. \n􀁸 pre – prefix means before \n􀁸 peri – prefix means around \n􀁸 hemi – prefix means half \n􀁸 micro – prefix means small \n􀁸 neo – prefix means new \nSuffixes \nSuffixes are attached to the end of a word root to add meaning such as condition, disease process, or procedure. \n􀁸 itis-suffix means inflammation \n􀁸 ology-suffix means the study of \n􀁸 ectomy-suffix means surgical removal \n􀁸 plast-suffix means surgical repair \nCombining vowel \nCombining vowel is used with the word root to add a “smoothing” to the word root when applying a suffix, the most common vowel used in the formation of the combining form is the letter -o-, added to the word root. \nHere are a few examples of how to understand medical terms \n Cardiology \nCardi = heart -logy = study of \no = combining \nvowel \nPolyarthralgia \nPoly = Much, many -algia = pain \narthr = joint \nMedical abbreviations are used to promote efficiency. There are some risks associated with their use because they may vary from country to country and one acronym can have several meanings. \nHere are some examples: \n\n| Meaning | Australian Abbreviation | American Abbreviation |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| Antibiotics | Ab’s | ABX |\n| Before a meal | a.c. | a.c or AC |\n| Ax | Assessment | Axillary |\n| R/O | Risk Of | Rule Out |\n\nMedical acronyms are formed with the initial letters of a multi-word name; they can have more than one meaning. It is important to understand the context in which the acronym is used. \nSome examples of acronyms with two meaning are as follows: \n􀁸 CF Clear Fluids – or – Cardiac Failure \n􀁸 DOA Drug Of Addiction – or – Dead On Arrival \nEnglish medical acronyms are written in uppercase, Latin acronyms are written in lower case. Here are some examples of Latin medical acronyms: \n􀁸 b.d","cbCaitiuS0Lii8pp","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitiuS0Lii8pp","pdf",232034,"English","# Introduction\n## Medical terms\n## Medical abbreviations\n## Medical Acronyms\n## Pronouncing medical terms\n## Systems of the Body\n## Location, Position and Motion Terms","[{\"question\":\"How is medical terminology built from word parts?\",\"answer\":\"Medical terminology uses a systematic approach based on word roots, prefixes, suffixes, and combining vowels to form accurate meanings.\"},{\"question\":\"Why can medical abbreviations be risky to use?\",\"answer\":\"They may vary from country to country, and a single acronym can have several meanings, so context matters.\"},{\"question\":\"What rules help interpret medical acronyms correctly?\",\"answer\":\"Acronyms are formed from initial letters of multi-word terms and may have more than one meaning; understanding the context and capitalization rules (uppercase for English, lower case for Latin) is essential.\"}]","Medical Terminology - Introduction to word roots, prefixes, suffixes, abbreviations, and acronyms | PDF",1790582152,23]
