Chicago Catholic.  \u003Cbr>WHEREVER he goes,Martin Marty  \u003Cbr>keeps his eyes open and,presumably,a  \u003Cbr>well-traveled notebook in hand.Six  \u003Cbr>years of the give-and-take of seminars,  \u003Cbr>workshops,lectures and conversations  \u003Cbr>helped to stoke the Marty typewriter in  \u003Cbr>turning out this call for help.  \u003Cbr>Christian faith and practice in the  \u003Cbr>United States,long factionalized,  \u003Cbr>trivialized and politicized,stand in  \u003Cbr>danger of being capsized in a drift to  \u003Cbr>the right.Morale and mission are  \u003Cbr>harder to perceive.Except for those  \u003Cbr>supporting the banners of the Moral  \u003Cbr>Majority,too many Christian shoul-  \u003Cbr>ders are simply being shrugged.  \u003Cbr>The problems for American chur-  \u003Cbr>ches are urgent,Marty believes,and  \u003Cbr>constructive solutions are not in-  \u003Cbr>evitable.He sees the best hope in an  \u003Cbr>emerging “public church,”which he  \u003Cbr>describes as a “communion of commu-  \u003Cbr>nions”that mingles—but does not  \u003Cbr>merge—large elements from within  \u003Cbr>mainline Protestantism,evangelicalism  \u003Cbr>and Roman Catholicism.  \u003Cbr>Dr.Marty,professor of Christian  \u003Cbr>history at the University of Chicago  \u003Cbr>and a prominent figure in ecumenical   | exchanges,applies impressive skills as  \u003Cbr>a writer and editor to providing a state-  \u003Cbr>of-religion analysis.  \u003Cbr>Although he's concerned with mal-  \u003Cbr>aise and demoralization within many  \u003Cbr>of the comfortable old-line churches,  \u003Cbr>the good humor that goes along with  \u003Cbr>his penetrating journalism and per-  \u003Cbr>suasive scholarship assures the reader a  \u003Cbr>stimulating time.  \u003Cbr>The book is so well done that it will  \u003Cbr>be criticized from many directions,  \u003Cbr>most of them to the right of center.It  \u003Cbr>may be the biggest 192-page book  \u003Cbr>around at the moment,constructing  \u003Cbr>upon a foundation of history a prag-  \u003Cbr>matic model for a public church form-  \u003Cbr>ed around Jesus Christ and above the  \u003Cbr>existing models that it rejects.  \u003Cbr>These Marty identifies as totalist,  \u003Cbr>tribalist and privatist.Shi'ite Islam is  \u003Cbr>both totalist and tribalist;privatist  \u003Cbr>religion expresses complete individual-  \u003Cbr>ism of religious choice and practice,  \u003Cbr>needing no community expression.  \u003Cbr>Some may sense a faint echo of Til-  \u003Cbr>lich's suggestion that the demands of  \u003Cbr>cultural and ethnic heritages and other  \u003Cbr>values secure in history should be sa-  \u003Cbr>luted,but not allowed to block the  \u003Cbr>future.  \u003Cbr>Marty is troubled by the argument,  \u003Cbr>widely repeated even by those who find  \u003Cbr>it abhorrent,that the fastest-growing  \u003Cbr>religious bodies in the United States are  \u003Cbr>likely to be the most exclusive,precise   | and unyielding in their convictions,in-  \u003Cbr>cluding the conviction that everybody  \u003Cbr>else is wrong.  \u003Cbr>The public church,on the other  \u003Cbr>hand,recognizes the values even in  \u003Cbr>non-biblical religions.It doesn't really  \u003Cbr>want to exclude,even though each of  \u003Cbr>its constituencies knows its own iden-  \u003Cbr>tity without self consciousness.
