We're being encouraged to hand over huge parts of human endeavor and experience to a brand new, resource-hungry form of intelligence in the name of progress, ostensibly to make our lives easier. Not knowing how this proposed transition will play out or affect our very existence creates, for me, both a sense of free-for-all unreality and a paradoxical feeling of how  \nreal and heavy these choices made on our collective behalf can be. No wonder I sometimes just want to sit under a quilt and read about wizards and dragons fora bit, or escape into a welcoming space of colorful fabric and sew some seams.  \nWhen the requirements, responsibilities, and rigors of reality become overwhelming, a retreat into the world of fantasy can be a way to recenter and recharge, much like a focused, constructive quilting session. Making a quilt is alot like building a fantasy realm; one pulls together disparate parts and pieces, colors and shapes, selecting each element individually for its particular meritsand how it fits in with its surroundings, creating a new composition that didn’t exist until it was lovingly brought to life.
