Twilight, that mysterious time before sunrise and just after sunset, comes into its own this month – admire it from an upstairs window or, even better, \ntake a stroll under painterly skies. \nWe relish hearth and home too – be it the art on our walls, favourite mugs in our kitchens or bringing in bright berries and leaves from our gardens. Wildlife is slowing down and preparing for hibernation, our own reminder that taking an analogue moment now and again – the ritual of playing a record or curling up with a book – can restore us like nothing else. This may be a short season, but for many of us it’s the sweetest of all. \nLisa \nEDITOR \nLISA SYKES \nGATHERING \nBeer, bratwurst and other Bavarian treats… what’s notto love? \nBier garden \nCREATE A BIT OF BAVARIA IN YOUR OUTSIDE SPACE WITH A GATHERING CELEBRATING THE BEST OF GERMAN \nBEER AND FOOD. No need to get on a planeto Munich for the annual celebration of beer and Bavarian culture. It might not be Munich, but it will definitely be wunderbar. » \n*The original Oktoberfest was held in October 1810, when Bavaria was a new kingdom, and was a week of festivities centred on a horse race. In 1815, beer was added to the mix, and later in the 19th century came the funfair and chicken roasteries. Because of complaints about the rain ruining the fun, in 1905, the festival was moved \nto the end of September, and now almost always finishes on the first Sunday of October. 7 \nPretzels \nSoft, chewy and great with a beer, Homemade pretzels can kickoff your Oktoberfest celebrations. \nMakes 10 \n7g yeast \n1 tbsp sugar \n14g butter, melted \n1 tsp salt \n500g flour (approx) 120gbaking soda Coarse sea salt, for topping \n1 Whisk theyeast and sugar into 360ml warm water in a bowl.
