It explains the overall exam structure, including multiple-choice and free-response sections, time allocation, question formats, and calculator rules. The review highlights strategies for non-calculator multiple-choice problems, diagram interpretation, and “show your work” grading. Students generally have a good sense of how to use a calculator, but lack the skills of doing math without a calculator. Most math classes stress the use of calculators to solve problems and on the AP chemistry exam seventy-five percent of it is to be done without calculators. You will need to practice the basic math skills that you already know (just haven’t used much in the past) to develop your thinking to solve the problems that you will encounter. \nFormat ofthe AP Chemistry Exam \nThe AP exam consists of two parts: multiple choice and free-response questions. Each part of the exam will count 50% of the overall grade. \n❖ Format of Multiple Choice AP test: \no 50% of overall grade \no Directly tied to the Learning Objectives (and there are 117 LO in the framework) \no 90 minutes on the section \n❖ 60 multiple choice questions \n❖ Average time is 90 seconds per question \no NO CALCULATORS ARE TO BE USED \no Multiple Choice questions \n❖“Hard” questions are generally in the middle of the test. \n● This is designed to “separate the students out” – find a break between the fours and fives, the threes and the fours, etc. \n❖ Choices go from the \n● lowest number to the highest number \n● they are generally lined up by decimal points, even though this does \nnot make the number list “straight” \no Allows you to see decimal points easier. \no Allows you to see significant figures easier. \n❖ Look for the word approximate in the question, if there, you can use estimation to help arrive at the answer. \n❖ Format of questions will be \n● Non-calculator \n● Four choice question (A, B, C and D) \n● Can use periodic table and equation sheets \n● Will have discrete items (stand-alone questions) \n● Will have “sets of assessments” \no Sets will be between 1/3 and ½ of the test (i.e. between 20 and \n30 MC questions) \no Sets will cover multiple topics of chemistry using the same stem. \n❖ Interpreting diagrams \n❖ simple math problems \n❖ No penalty for guessing \n❖ \nAP Chemistry Mathematics Review Page 1 \nFormat of Free Response Questions \no 50% of overall grade \n❖ Seven Free Response Questions \n● 3 “LONG” problems \no Multi-part problems \no designed to be 20 to 25 minutes each \n● 4 “SHORT” problems \no Generally single-part or two-part questions \no designed to be 3 to 7 minutes each \no Format of Free-response \n❖ Can use periodic table and equation sheets \n❖ Calculator can be used on all questions \n❖ On each test, there will be the following question types (may be combined into a single question – long problem with multiple parts): \n● Lab 1: Experimental design \no Students will have to design a lab \no think scientific method \n● Lab 2: Patterns/analysis of data/selection of authentic data to explain observations \no Take a data table and find the results of the lab. \n● Representations 1: Translation between representations \n● Representations 2: Atomic/molecular view to explain observation \n● Quantitative: Following a logical/analytical pathway \nNote on grading \nThe free-response problems are graded on an “internally consistent” basis. That means that if you need the answer from part (a) to do part (b) and made a mistake in part (a) you can still get full credit for part (b), PROVIDED that the reader (the person who grades your test) can see your work and follow what you did. That means “SHOW YOUR WORK”. Remember: \nNO WORK ➔ NO CREDIT \nSource of the problems \nEach problem of the following practice problems are directly related to released AP chemistry exam questions. There will be nothing in this packet that does not directly relate to developing the skills and abilities that students need to be successful on the AP chemistry exam. \nHow to do the math \nWh","cbCaila5OYE9tDfm","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaila5OYE9tDfm","pdf",2101195,56,"English","# Format of the AP Chemistry Exam\n## Multiple Choice Format\n## Free Response Format\n## Note on Grading\n# How to Do the Math\n## Intent and Approach\n## Conversion Factors and Dimensional Analysis\n## Units and Dimensional Analysis","[{\"question\":\"What are the two main parts of the AP Chemistry exam and how are they weighted?\",\"answer\":\"The exam has multiple-choice questions and free-response questions, each counting for 50% of the overall grade.\"},{\"question\":\"Are calculators allowed on the AP Chemistry math sections?\",\"answer\":\"No calculators are used for the multiple-choice section.
