As you work through the problems, you will discover that algebra, geometry, and trigonometry have been integrated into a mathematical whole. Unlike textbooks you may have used in the past, there are no chapters or sections on speci􀀌c topics. The whole curriculum is problemcentered, rather than topic-centered. Techniques and theorems become apparent as you work through the problems, and we encourage you to keep a notebook of the work you have done along with your notes from class discussions. These materials are designed to give you the tools for self-discovery. The 􀀌rst use of a key word is italicized and de􀀌ned in the Reference. \n[Problems](Problems ............................................ page)[ ............................................ page](Problems ............................................ page) 1 \n[Reference](Reference ........................................... page)[ ........................................... page](Reference ........................................... page) 97 \n[Appendix](Appendix .......................................... page)[ .......................................... page](Appendix .......................................... page) 115 \nProblem solving: We encourage you to approach each problem as an exploration. Read each question carefully! It is important to make accurate diagrams. Here are a few other useful strategies to keep in mind: make and solve an easier problem 􀀌rst, try a guess-andcheck technique, recall work on a similar problem. It is important that you work on each problem when assigned, since any work you bring to class can help you and your class understand and uncover a solution. Problem solving requires persistence as much as it requires ingenuity. When you get stuck, or solve a problem incorrectly, back up and start over. Keep in mind that you're probably not the only one who is stuck. Bring to class a written record of your e􀀋orts, not just a blank space in your notebook. The methods that you use to solve a problem, the corrections that you make in your approach, the means by which you test the validity of your solutions, and your ability to communicate ideas are just as important as getting the correct answer. \nTechnology: Most of the problems in this book can be done without technology (graphing calculators, computer software, or applications) . Nevertheless, you are encouraged to thoughtfully use technology to explore, and to formulate and test conjectures. It is important to use technology wisely. The technology that you have access to for homework may not be what is allowed on a test/quiz. Keep the following guidelines in mind: think before youreach for a device; keep notes in your notebook, so that you will have a clear record of what you have done; be wary of rounding mid-calculation; pay attention to the degree of accuracy requested; and be prepared to explain your method to your classmates. If you are asked to graph a curve the expectation is that, although you might use a graphing tool to generate a picture of the curve, you should sketch that picture in your notebook, with correctly scaled axes. If you do not know how to perform a needed action, there are many resources available online, but beware of substituting online research for learning through self-discovery. \nStandardized testing: Standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, and Advanced Placement tests require calculators for certain problems. Although the Mathematics Department promotes the use of a variety of tools, it is still useful for students to know how to use hand-held graphing calculators. While many of the math faculty are well-versed in using these calculators and can answer questions as they arise, we leave it to students to determine the appropriate device for their test and manage their own practi","cbCaiek3bLa8Npab","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiek3bLa8Npab","pdf",900844,129,"English","# To the Student\n## Contents\n## Problem solving\n## Technology\n## Standardized testing","[{\"question\":\"What makes these Mathematics 3-4 materials different from typical textbooks?\",\"answer\":\"They are problem-centered and integrate algebra, geometry, and trigonometry into one curriculum rather than organizing content into separate chapters or sections.\"},{\"question\":\"What problem-solving approach does the guide recommend?\",\"answer\":\"Approach each problem as an exploration: read questions carefully, make accurate diagrams, and use strategies like solving an easier related problem first or applying guess-and-check.\"},{\"question\":\"How should students use technology when working on the problems?\",\"answer\":\"Many problems can be done without tools, but students should use technology thoughtfully to explore and test conjectures, while keeping notes and being mindful of allowed tools on tests.\"}]","Mathematics 3-4 - To the Student | PDF",325]
