The materials within are intended to help parents understand how mathematics is taught in schools today and why, as well as to engage them in their child’s mathematics learning. \nThe format of this document is intended to allow you to take what you would like to highlight, whether it be the five strands or the sample activities that involve math, and use it in communication products for your school community. The file is a WORD document so that you can easily cut and paste the content and illustrations to fit your needs. \nIn addition to this resource, there are web resources for parents/guardians, such [as mathies.ca](as mathies.ca), that include games, learning tools, and activities. Other resources include Inspiring Your Child To Love and Learn Math, Doing Mathematics with Your Child/ Les mathématiques avec votre enfant, an updated parent’s guide to help children learn mathematics, as well as Partnering With Your Teen in Mathematics, a parent’s guide to support older students learn mathematics. \nTable of Contents \nThe Five Strands 3 \nThe Seven Math Processes 4 \nHow Is Math Learning Assessed and Evaluated? 7 \nMyths & Facts 9 \nResources 10 \nHow and Why it’s Different 11 \nMyths & Facts 11 \nResources 12 \nWhat can I do to support my child’s math learning? 12 \nSupport for Problem Solving 13 \nMyths & Facts about Learning Math 14 \nResources for My Learning, as a Parent of a Math Learner 15 \nSuggested Activities 16 \nSample Activities that Involve Math 17 \n19 \nMyths & Facts 19 \nResources for you and your child 19 \nOntario’s Math Curriculum at a Glance \nOur world is rapidly changing. Technology is evolving at lightning speed. And, more than ever before, strong math skills are critical to future success. Ontario’s math curriculum is designed to prepare your child for success in today’s world. \nThe Five Strands \nThe math curriculum for each elementary school grade is organized in five strands, or areas of learning. In each strand, students develop their ability to think mathematically, investigate concepts and relationships, apply their knowledge and skills to solve problems, and communicate their thinking. \nNumber Sense and Numeration \nIn this strand, your child is learning about numbers and operations and how to use numbers to describe and understand the world around them. Your child is developing strategies to solve problems involving number calculations efficiently and accurately. The knowledge and skills learned in this strand are used in all other strands. \nMeasurement \nYour child is learning to estimate and measure lengths and distances, area, mass, volume, capacity, time, and temperature. In higher grades, your child will learn and apply measurement formulas, such as area of a circle = 􀁓r2. \nGeometry and Spatial Sense \nYour child is learning to classify, compare, and construct angles, lines, and shapes, and to visualize and describe positions and motion in space. Your child will apply the properties of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional figures when solving geometry problems. \nPatterning and Algebra \nYour child is learning to build models to represent real-life situations. Your child is developing the ability to identify patterns and generalize and make predictions based on patterns. Your child is learning to use symbols and equations to describe mathematical relationships. \nData Management and Probability \nYour child is collecting, organizing, displaying, and drawing conclusions from data, and learning to use math to describe the likelihood that something will happen. \nYour child is learning to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in these five strands to solve real-l","cbCaigB6LrhLRvMy","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigB6LrhLRvMy","pdf",1757889,"English","# The Five Strands\n## Number Sense and Numeration\n## Measurement\n## Geometry and Spatial Sense\n## Patterning and Algebra\n## Data Management and Probability\n# The Seven Math Processes\n## Problem Solving\n## Reasoning and Proving\n## Reflecting\n## Selecting Tools and Computational Strategies","[{\"question\":\"What are the five strands of Ontario’s elementary math curriculum?\",\"answer\":\"The five strands are Number Sense and Numeration, Measurement, Geometry and Spatial Sense, Patterning and Algebra, and Data Management and Probability.\"},{\"question\":\"What are the seven math processes students use while learning math?\",\"answer\":\"They include problem solving, reasoning and proving, reflecting, selecting tools and computational strategies, connecting, representing, and communicating.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the document suggest parents can support their child’s math learning?\",\"answer\":\"It provides resources and suggested activities, including sample math-related activities and guidance on problem solving support, to engage parents in their child’s learning.\"}]","Math-Learning-Today-2016-06-29-EN | PDF",1790761934]
