After an especially unlucky day at work and a walk that keeps going wrong, she remembers her favorite Marble Cafe near the shrine. Arriving only to find it closed, she meets a woman who reveals the unexpected—today the cafe is transformed into Matcha Cafe. Miho steps inside to discover a new matcha-focused atmosphere and familiar staff.","[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nAbout the Author \nMichiko Aoyama is the author of the multi-million-copy bestselling What You Are Looking For is in the Library, translated by Alison Watts, which was a Time Book of the Year, a Times bestseller and a New York Times Book of the Month. Probably. \nBut where do the gods reside? On the other side of this offertory box? Up in the sky? Or …? \nIt’s almost the middle of the month, but since this is my first shrine visit of the year, it’s essentially my hatsumode – my ‘first prayer ’ for the New Year. \nI work at a mobile phone store inside a shopping mall. The mall was open through the New Year ’s holiday, so we didn’t get any time off. Even though they tried to schedule us in short, rotating shifts, single employees like metended to yield longer breaks to those with families and took on additional shifts ourselves. \nWhen I didn’t even have the time to help prepare the New Year Osechi meal, my parents complained, saying,‘Miho, you’re already twenty-six.’But I’m in my prime working years, so I hope that they cut me some slack. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loved all things mechanical, so I like working with mobile phones. \nBut the January shift schedule was different from usual, and having misread it, I showed up for an early shift today only to discover it was my day off. \nBummer. I could’ve stayed up late last night and slept in this morning. \nI didn’t feel like going home straight away, so I took a walk around themall. Some days, nothing seems to go right. I dropped by a clothing store to buy a down jacket I’d had my eye on, but it was sold out. Hoping to lift my spirits, I went into a fast-food place, but I spilled the ketchup for my fries all over the sleeve of my sweater. I went to the bathroom to rinse off the ketchup, only to realize when I went to wipe the stain that I’d left my handkerchief at home. \nA truly unlucky day. I’m not exactly the lucky type to begin with but today feels especially jinxed. Maybe it was because I hadn’t gone to the shrine for my ‘first prayer ’ this year. It was a bit of a walk from the mall to the shrine, but I thought I should pay it a visit. Maybe get cleansed of my bad luck while I was at it. \nI’m thinking about all of this as I pray, when Marble Cafe suddenly comes to mind. \nIf you go straight down the street along the river near the shrine, you’ll find a small coffee shop where the row of cherry blossom trees ends. It’s a cosy place managed by a nice young man, and the interior design is incredibly stylish. And, of course, the coffee and tea are delicious. I only go occasionally when I have an early shift, but it’s a particular favourite of mine. That’s it – on this unlucky day, I should visit my favourite place to boost my mood. \nAs I walk, I glance sideways at the cluster of cherry blossom trees with their bare boughs devoid of blooms and leaves. \nMy red checked scarf is wrapped up to my lips and I breathe into it. My hands, tucked in my pockets, are numb from the cold. \nFrom the shadows of the trees, the Marble Cafe’s awning emerges.
