Her name was Mary Shelley, and in the summer of 1816 she was just 18 years old. She wasn't sitting in a spooky castle laboratory or a dark cave. She was stuck indoors near Lake Geneva, in Switzerland, watching rain pour down for days on end. Out of that gloomy, gray vacation came a story people are still reading more than
200 years later.
That endless rain wasn't ordinary bad luck, either. People later called 1816 "the year without a summer," because a huge volcanic eruption on the other side of the world had thrown so
much ash into the sky that it dimmed the sun and chilled the weather across Europe. Cold and bored, Mary and her friends huddled by the fire telling German ghost stories to pass the time. Then one of them, the poet Lord Byron, tossed out a challenge: each person should try to write a scary tale of their own. Can you imagine your best idea ever coming from a boring, rained-out afternoon?
That challenge is exactly what lit the spark for Mary's tale. She had a vivid daydream about a scientist who builds a living creature out of lifeless parts, then watches in horror as it opens its eyes. She turned that single image into a full novel called "Frankenstein," which was published in 1818, when she was only 20. Here's the mix-up almost everyone makes: Frankenstein is the name of the scientist, Victor Frankenstein, not the creature he creates. The creature in the book actually has no name at all.
Getting the name right matters because the story is really about theman, not the monster. Many people call "Frankenstein" one of the very first science fiction novels, because it imagines what might happen when new science pushes past what humans can safely control. Instead of using magic or curses, Victor uses knowledge and experiments to create life, which was a fresh idea for storytelling back then. The book keeps asking a hard question: if you make something, are you responsible for what happens to it? That question is what makes the tale feel less like a jumpscare and more like a puzzle you keep turning over in your mind.
That very puzzle is why the story refuses to fade away. Every time a movie or book warns about a robot, a clone, or an invention that gets out of hand, it is borrowing from Mary Shelley's idea. Her creature has appeared in hundreds of films, comics, and Halloween costumes, usually with a square green head and bolts in its neck, even though the book never describes it that way. She never got to see any of it, since she wrote the book long before movies existed. Think about it: a bored teenager on a rainy trip invented a question the whole world is still trying to answer.
Mary Shelley and Frankenstein
Name:

| Solve each problem.
Use the article to answer the question.
1) How old was Mary Shelley when she came up with the idea for her story?
A.
