\"maternity\"clinic sterilizing the poorwho requested it.Much verbiage poured fromthe press on both sides. Two of the quotationsrecorded at the time seemed to bring the realissue into focus. \nRabbi Jay Kaufman,vice-president of the Union of American HebrewCongregations,insisted:\"Voluntary sterilization is 'Playing God,'tampering with the divine economy.\"In defense of their practice,Dr.James Dellinger, head of the clinic,replied:\"We are not playingGod;we simply believe that sterilization is good medicine. We arenot interested in this sociological mumbo-jumbo,and I personally feelthat religion and medicine don't mix.\" \nSo,the doctor mouths his own brand of medical mumbo-jumbo,substituting science for God and excluding the Author of life fromthe inner sanctum of the temple of medicine, the operating room. \nJust such cases as the poor women of Virginia were the concernof John XXIII when he gave us Mater et Magistra:\"God in his prov-idence has bestowed on the hunan race sufficient resources to shoulderwith dignity the burden of bringing children into the world. But thistask becones difficult or even impossible when men are led astray orbecome twisted in mind and so turn to means that are opposed to hunanreason or to man's social nature, and thus to the plans of God Himself.\" \nThe Pope points to the source of the problem:\"a defective economicand social organization which does not provide means of subsistenceand the failure of a sense of solidarity among people.\"And in sug-gesting a solution,he warns us against \"methods and means that areunworthy of man and that exclude God from human life,\"and assuresus that\"the solution is to be found only in socio-economic progressachieved in a moral atmosphere befitting the dignity of mankind andthe
