Each year our students come to us from all over the city and surrounding suburbs. Intuitive ability, arithmetic skills, and algebraic foundations vary quite a bit. Because of this, we have a comprehensive placement process used to identify the best course for each student. \nThe Placement Process \nCriteria the school uses to place your son are: \n􀁸 Grade school/middle school transcripts \n􀁸 A recommendation from your son’s current math teacher \n􀁸 Scores on the MUHS Entrance Exam/High School Placement Test (HSPT) \n􀁸 If necessary, the results ofa Math Department Placement Test \nFreshmen are generally placed in one of the following year-long courses: \n100 Algebra 1 \n104 Honors Algebra 1 & 2 \n130 Honors Geometry/Algebra 2 \nHistorically about 65% of freshmen take Algebra 1, 20% take Honors Algebra1 & 2, 10% take Honors Geometry/Algebra 2 and 5% take Honors Precalculus or some other class. Many of the students who place in our Algebra 1 class have taken some form of algebra in the 8th grade, but may not have completed or mastered all of the topics at a high school level. Ifa student does not place into honors math right away, he should not be discouraged or feel as ifhe is repeating the same algebra course. We will do our best to challenge every student, and that requires a solid algebra foundation to be successful in all upper level math and science courses. In addition, high performing students have the opportunity to move to the Honors level after taking Algebra 1 as freshmen. \nHow are students placed? \no Students who score above 90% on the math portion ofthe HSPT and have a comparable 8th grade teacher recommendation will be placed in Honors Geometry/Algebra 2 \no Students who score between 70-89% on the math portion ofthe HSPT and have a comparable 8th grade teacher recommendation will be placed in Honors Algebra 1 & 2 \no Students who score below 70% on the HSPT will be placed in Algebra 1 \no Students who have taken a high school geometry class and have a high school geometry transcript do not need to retake geometry at MUHS. Those students can begin in Honors Algebra 1 &2 and then move to Honors Precalculus or they can begin in Honors Precalculus. \nWhat if I don’t think my son’s placement is accurate? \no Students have two options for taking the MUHS Math Department Placement Exam \no An in-person test will be administered on Thursday, April 29th from 6-7:30 pm and on Saturday, May 1st from 9-10:30 am in the Cannon Commons. Students can choose either date, and you will receive information on how to register to take the math placement exam. \n􀂃 The test is comprised of three parts. Part one is free response, part two is answers only and part three is multiple choice. \n􀂃 Bring sharpened \\#2 pencils. No calculator is allowed. \no There is an option to take the online version of the math placement exam the week of May 3rd-7th. This test takes 1.5 hours, and students can take the test from home. \n􀂃 The test is multiple choice and students will need to submit a PDF of their work at the end. No calculator is allowed. \n􀂃 The instructions for taking the online test will be sent after registering for it. \no There are often students who don’t fit neatly into the above categories. Please call or email Mrs. Beth Piper if you’d like to talk about your son’s math placement. \nWhat topics are on the MUHS Math Placement Exam? \no Real Numbers: properties, fractions, order of operations, add/subtract/multiple/divide signed numbers \no Solving: linear equations, inequalities, systems of linear equations, quadratic equations, equations with rational expressions, equations with radical expressions, word problems \no Graphing: linear equations, systems of linear equations, quadratic equations, inequalities, slope, intercepts \no Factoring: greatest common factor, binomials,","cbCaiaq2tToVBNr6","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiaq2tToVBNr6","pdf",326312,"English","# The Placement Process\n## Placement Criteria\n## Year-Long Placement Courses\n## How Students Are Placed\n## Math Department Placement Exam Options\n## Exam Topics\n## Teacher Recommendation Process\n## If Placement Is Not Accurate","[{\"question\":\"What criteria does MUHS use to place incoming freshmen in math?\",\"answer\":\"MUHS uses grade school/middle school transcripts, a recommendation from the student’s current math teacher, scores on the MUHS Entrance Exam/HSPT, and, when necessary, results from a Math Department Placement Test.\"},{\"question\":\"How are students assigned to Honors Geometry/Algebra 2, Honors Algebra 1 \\u0026 2, or Algebra 1?\",\"answer\":\"Students scoring above 90% on the math portion of the HSPT with a comparable teacher recommendation are placed in Honors Geometry/Algebra 2; scores between 70–89% place students in Honors Algebra 1 \\u0026 2; scores below 70% place students in Algebra 1.\"},{\"question\":\"What topics are covered on the MUHS Math Placement Exam?\",\"answer\":\"The exam includes Real Numbers, Solving, Graphing, Factoring, Rational Expressions, and Radicals, covering skills such as simplifying expressions, solving equations and inequalities, and graphing key equation types.\"}]","Marquette University High School Freshman Mathematics Placement | PDF"]
