1946 \nIn this issue: \nPope of PeaceUnder Mary's Banner \n$1.00 per year \nby James M.Darby,S.M. \nby Thomas F.Doyle \nVocation Month \nMOST Catholic Schools hold eachyear a Vocation Month eitherduring March, the month of St.Jo-seph,or during May,the month of OurBlessed Mother. The choice of this timeis partly dictated by the fact that it co-incides with the normal period of deci-sion for those finishing grade school, orattending high school or college:towardsthe end of the school year, plans mustbe made for the year following. \nBut there is another reason that goesdeeper than this accident of the calen-dar.The truth that each of us has a“calling”from God,or a\"vocation,\"isnowhere more evident than in the livesof St.Joseph and of Our Blessed Mother. \nJust as they were called by God toparticipate in the sublime mysteries ofthe Incarnation and the Redemption, sowe are also, though in a lesser degree;for we are members of Christ's MysticalBody and entrusted with the ChristianApostolate. \nSome of us,moreover, are called tothis participation in Christ's mysteries ina more special manner,so that our wholelives are devoted to Christ's service, aswere those of Joseph and Mary.It isabove all for the young people who havethe generosity to embrace such a\"HigherCalling”in the priesthood or the reli-gious brotherhood or sisterhood, that theannual Vocation Months are held. \nAt the present time, even as in thetime of Our Lord, the harvest is greatbut the laborers are few;and those whocarry on the work of Christ must do asHe did—go about asking others to fol-low Him also. They have one difficulty, however, with which Christ Himself didnot have to contend:the opposition ofparents to the vocations of their chil-dren.This is rapidly becoming one ofthe greatest problems in the recruitmentof the apostolic workers of the Church. Our young people, when they see theproblem clearly, are still as generous asever, but something has happened to thefaith of our Christian homes. \nOne frequently learns from older Re-ligious that the decisive factor in their \nvocation was the encouragement,or eventhe urging,of their parents, who felt thatthere was no surer way of bringing theblessing of God upon their homes thanby Having one of their children entirelyconsecrated to His service. But fromyounger Religious,it is not uncommonto hear a quite different 'story:that theirparents misunderstood their desire to fol-low Christ more closely, looked upontheir vocation as something of a tragedy, and did what they could to oppose,or atleast delay, its realization. \nProbably the principal causes of thischange are to be found in the great em-phasis which modern life places upontemporal, and even material, ideals;andin the gradual shrinking of the size ofthe average family. As long as these twotendencies remain unchecked,it is to beexpected that a child's generous interestin a life of service to Christ will seemto parents to be something of a familydisaster instead of what it really is:amark of God's special love and thecrowning glory of their success as Chris-tian parents. \nGRANTED that at the present timethere is little evidence that these twounfortunate tendencies are being re-versed,something can still be done toneutralize their influence in withholdingworkers from Christ's vineyard. The ob-servance of Vocation Month should beextended from the schools into the par-ishes,and even into Christian homes.Inthis way a new appreciation of the beau-ty of a vocation to the priesthood or thereligious life can be given to those whohave lost it through forgetfulness, orthrough acquired prejudices. \nTwo of the articles in this issue dealwith religious vocations:\"The GreaterGift\"with an unusual case of parentalhardship and
