The boy's name was Mapesho. Mapesho was a double orphan who grew up with his uncle, Mr Kibuulu. He was liked so much by his uncle. Unfortuneltly, his aunt, Mrs Kibuulu , hated him and treted him so badly. She believed that her husband did not like her children because of his nephew. However, she could not complain to her husband because she respected him.  \nMapesho was very miserable but was very hopeful that one day the God of his late father and mother would answer his desires. His only hope, his uncle, was deaf and dumb although he was very intelligent and hard working. Everyone in the village knew how to communicate with him through signs. His wife however, did not fear to say anything evil to Mapesho.  \nShe knew that Mapesho would not open his mouth to tell his uncle anythging. WheneverMr Kibuulu was out hunting. Mapesho would not be given any food until his unle came back. She told her children not to play with him because he would bring bad luck to them and they would also be orphans. Whenever they came from school, the two brothers, Wikimona and Langa, could shout at him. They would tell him that heate his parents and that he would never see them again. He would cry but their young sister, Mapalo, would tell them to stop the nonsense and would comfort him. She would try to share with him the little food she carried to school but Mapesho would refuse, for fear of being reported to their mother. Sometimes her brothers beat her for supporting the fatherless and motherless boy. Mapalo really liked him and was ready to do anything to please him.  \nWhen they came back from school, Mapalo would hide part of her share of food and secretly take to him. He was her best secret friend although her mother and brothers woukd not allow her to befriend him.  \nDespite the misery , Mapesho worked very hard at school and was always position one in clas. He always encouraged his friend Mapalo to equally work hard. Wikimona and Langa always took last position in class, Grade Six, and sat on the same desk. Both knew how to read and write. This is the way they communicated with Mr Kibuulu who also knew how to read and write. Mapesho always respected elders and listened to them. Mapalo always reported in writing to her father about how Mapesho was being treated but whenever his uncle asked him, he refused and pretended that all was well.  \nHe did not want his uncle to pick up a quarrel with hia aunt.  \nOne day, Mapesho and his two cousins went out to fetch firewood . They met an oldman dressed in rags. Wikimona and Langa really laughed at the old man and called him all sorts of names. Mapesho remained behind and apologised to the old man for the behaviour of his cousins . Then the old man gave him a small basket made of reeds. He told him that whenever he is in trouble , he should step in it.  \nOn his way home, Mapesho saw the whole of his family running towards him with a mob of people chasing them with machetes and big dogs. He suddenly put his basket down and stepped in it. It become an aeroplane and he called all of them to quickly jump in. His uncle and Mapalo jumpedin and flew off.  \nMrs Kibuulu and her sons did not manage to get in.
