It describes how Zapf’s 1954 and 1968 volumes differ from earlier specimen books by using multiple languages and including writings about typography from authors worldwide. GraphicArts Press/Rochester 2008 \n# FOREWORD\n\nThroughout the history of typography, manufacturers of printingtypes have expended great efforton producing specimens of theirwares. It is understandable that so much time and care was devot-ed to such displays, since showing alphabets to their finest effectwould allow for the greatest appreciation of the beauty &qualityof the fonts. Therefore,it is no surprise that type specimens suchas Fournier's Manuale Typographique(1764),Bodoni's ManualeTypografico(1818),and the Klingspor type foundry's annual cal-endars(1920-41)are considered masterpieces of the printer's art.In each of these publications a variety of typefaces are beautifullydisplayed,in entirely appropriate arrangements. \nIt is in the tradition of such specimen books that Hermann Zapfproduced two magnificent volumes of alphabet displays:Manu-ale Typographicum [l]in 1954,followed by Manuale Typographi-cum [Il]in 1968.In some ways Zapf's Manuales follow up on theirpredecessors:all show an assortment oftypefaces, composed andprinted with exceptional care.In other aspects, however, his workdiffers significantly from what had been done in the past:Zapf'sbooks are set in multiple languages, reflecting the internationalfacet of typography, while the earlier volumes were mostly setin only one language. His specimens also contain texts abouttypography by authors from various countries and eras, furtheremphasizing the world-wide influence of typography. \nLooking at the amazing variety &inventiveness of Zapf's designsin his Manuales, one would think that he gave himself wide lati-tude in the layout and printing of the pages, but in fact there aremany restrictions imposed upon the designs: \n1-each page is limited to two colors only, black &red(by com-parison,the Klingspor calendars-and also a 1951 Almanach derLetternkunst designed by Zapf and Gotthard de Beauclair-use awide assortment of colors); \n2-each page contains a complete alphabet set in a specific font, along with a quotation about the letter arts(in Bodoni's Manualethere are mostly alphabet showings,or brief quotations withouta complete alphabet display); \n3-each layout occupies the same position on the page, with typearea and margins uniform from page to page(as opposed to us-ing different image areas for different examples);and \n4-composition is limited to only typographic matter(alphabets, ornaments &rules, with the occasional calligraphic letter);noillustration or other decorative material was permitted. \nConsidering these self-imposed limitations, the variety achievedby Zapf is even more impressive. \nHermann Zapf's Manuales of 1954 and1968 were printed by theStempel Typefoundry's house printing office and Ludwig Oehmsrespectively. The first was entirely set at Stempel, while the secondwas set at various shops around the world. Both are masterpiecesof typesetting and letterpress printing.Werealize that such crafts-manship cannot be surpassed, and in no way is the current volumemeant to stand comparison.Rather,as a tribute to Gudrun andHermannZapf, several oftheirfriendshave produced this ManualeZapficum utilizing the same criteria Hermann Zapf used in hisvolumes-but in this case employing only alphabet designs by theZapfs with texts by them or about their work-as atribute to thesetwo masters on their ninetieth birthdays. \nJerry Kelly,November 2008","cbCaiqPsTMSbffjC","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqPsTMSbffjC","pdf",3034358,"English","# FOREWORD\n## Typography specimen tradition\n## Zapf’s Manuales
