For the protection of its citizens, each license has requirements that individuals must meet to be licensed or certified in New York State.
SUNY’s academic programs leading to licensure are carefully designed to meet and exceed these State requirements. This is a role SUNY plays in protecting the public. Other states frequently have their own requirements, so, if your goal is to practice in another state, this disclosure will help you check to see what that state requires.
Per U.S. Federal Regulations, §668 .43 (2019 Rule), and in compliance with the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA) Manual version 22.1 (May 28, 2021), Maritime College provides the following disclosure related to the educational requirements for professional licensure. This disclosure does not provide any guarantee that any particular state licensure entity will approve or deny your application. Furthermore, this disclosure does not account for changes in state law or regulation that may affect your application for licensure and occur after this disclosure has been made.
In the United States, licensure for the engineering profession is regulated by state. Professional licensure protects the public by enforcing standards that restrict practice to qualified individuals who have met specific qualifications in education, work experience, and exams. Generally, engineering licensing boards require Professional Engineering (P. E. ) candidates to have:
• A bachelor’s degree accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET;
• Four years of acceptable, progressive, and verifiable work experience;
• Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam.
The Maritime College School of Engineering degree programs—B. E. in Electrical Engineering, B. E. in Facilities Engineering, B.E. in Marine Engineering, B.E. in Mechanical Engineering, B.E. in Naval Architecture—are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. If successfully completed, these programs meet the educational requirements to become a licensed professional engineer in New York State.
Details regarding professional engineering licensure in New York State are available here.

| AREA OF STUDY | STATES WHERE PROGRAM MEETS LICENSING REQUIREMENTS | STATES WHERE PROGRAM DOES NOT MEET LICENSING REQUIREMENTS | STATES FOR WHICH IT HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED IF PROGRAM MEETS LICENSING REQUIREMENTS |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Electrical Engineering | New York | | Alabama, Alaska, Arizona,
Arkansas, California, Colorado,
Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, |

| | | | Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland,
Massachusetts, Michigan,
Minnesota,
Mississippi,
Missouri, Montana, Nebraska,
Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina,
South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Facilities Engineering | New York | | Alabama, Alaska, Arizona,
Arkansas, California, Colorado,
Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, |

| | | | Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland,
Massachusetts, Michigan,
Minnesota,
Mississippi,
Missouri, Montana, Nebraska,
Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina,
South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Marine Engineering | New York | | Alabama, Alaska, Arizona,
Arkansas, California, Colorado,
Connecticut, Delaware, Flor","cbCairC9MgWqfeMs","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCairC9MgWqfeMs","pdf",130844,"English","# Engineering Licensure Overview
## SUNY Programs and State/Federal Requirements
## Licensing Process and Common Board Requirements
## Program Accreditation and Exam Requirements
## State Determinations by Area of Study","[{"question":"What is the purpose of this engineering licensure disclosure?","answer":"It explains how New York State licensing requirements are met through SUNY’s licensure-focused academic programs and points readers to state-specific requirements when practicing elsewhere."},{"question":"Does this disclosure guarantee licensure approval by a state board?","answer":"No. The document states it does not provide any guarantee that a particular state licensure entity will approve or deny an application."},{"question":"What are typical requirements for engineering licensing boards in the United States?","answer":"Generally, candidates need an ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree, four years of verifiable work experience, and passing the FE and PE exams."}]","Mandatory Professional Licensure Disclosure - Engineering - New York State Program Requirements | PDF",1789777970,15]
