He enjoyed playing games with his friends like all boys do. He loved the times around the fire at night with his family.  \nMana’s father was a quarter chief. He was respected by the men in the village. People would come and ask him for help in settling disputes and helping to reconcile individuals.  \nSometimes, Mana’s mother made palm wine to sell on market day. On good days she could make a little extra money by selling the palm wine. Other women in the village also made palm wine to sell on market day. The homes of these women became bars on market day. Sometimes they lost money when they could not sell all the wine they brewed.  \nMana’s father liked drinking palm wine and Mana often saw his father drunk. His father became angry and yelled at the people around him.  \nMana was sad when his father hit his mother while he was drunk. When this happened, Mana left the house and hid in a safe place. As Mana grew older, he began to think about his father’s habit of drinking. He noticed that his father was often sick after drinking and would drink more to make the sick feeling go away. Mana wished his father would not drink. But, since many other people also drank, he did not think his father would ever quit. Mana did not think anything would ever change.  \nMana did not attend school. One day he was playing football with some of his friends after school. His best friend asked Mana why he was sad. Mana told his friend: “I think the palm wine is making my father sick.
