incorpor-ate witlh the Grammar an English-Malay and a Malay-English Voea-bulary,eaeh containing some three or four tlhousand words, but inview of the fact that most people require a vocabulary containing aslarge a nimber of words as possible and are subjeeted to mueh dis-appointinent and annoyanee wlen they find that their vocabulary does1ot contain just tlie very word whieh they require,it lias been thoughtbetter to publish the vocabularies separately and to make them ascomplete as is consistent with the low price at whieh such works areexpected to sell. \nTlie list of words which is here offered to tlie pnblie eontains oversix thousand words and phrases. In such a list it is of coHrse impos-sible to include all the Malay words which may be met with in even avery limited range of Malay reading, and the student will no doubtmeet with some expressions in conversation with Malays which willnot be found in this vocabulary.Great care, however, has beentaken in the selection of the words, and it is hoped tlhat very fewwhieh are in common use or are likely to be needed by the student inthe first two or three years of his study of the language have beenomitted. \nIn this voeabulary,as in the\"Practical Malay Grammar,\"theMalay words are printed in roman letters only.Comparatively fewEuropeans make any serious attempt to learn the Arabie cliaraeter, andthose who do will no doubt require a dictionary rather than a voea-bulary.The omission of the Arabic eharaeters has enabled theprinters to put out this work in a very eompaet form and at a eost \nC:onsiderably below what it would otherwise have been. \nThe great defeet of Malay voeabularies printed in the Romancharacter has always been the difficulty of finding many of the wordsowing to variations of spelling. This has been particularly the casein regard to the romanization of the short vowel sound, which evenin the same work has been represented by different letters in differentwords, according to the derivation of the word or the fancy of theanithor,so that in many cases the student has had to hunt for a wordin two or three different places before he has been able to find it.This difficnlty has been obviated in tlhis work'by tlie adoption of thesame system of romanization which has been used in my Grammar andin all fhe other:Malay publieations of the Methodist Publishing House. \n# PREFACE.\n\nIts peculiar feature is the entire omission of thc short vowcl.Thismakcs it just as easy to find a word containing the short vowel as it isin a Malay dictionary printed in thc Arabic character, for instead ofhaving to look up such a word as nuschaya or psaka undcr two or thrcedifferent vowels, the student wiil be able to find it at once fron thesound. It is believed that this will be found to be a very great ad-vantage. \nThc introduction should be carefully studied by those who desireto makc an intelligent use of this vocabulary.Part of thc introduc-tion has becn reproduced from the Grammar, but there will also befound a large amount of entirely new matter cxplaining thc use ofprefixes and suffixes, the accentuation of Malay words, and the useand pronunciation of foreign words, ctc. The studcnt should not failto make the fullest usc of the Grammar, not only on account ","cbCaifXH0S8qW3oK","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifXH0S8qW3oK","pdf",10706268,174,"English","# PREFACE TO
