His father had given it to him when he was still alive. Mako and his friends always rode their bikes together. While his mother always wanted him to ride slowly, his friends always praised him for how fast he was .  \nOne day Mako saw his friend Niko in front of the \u003Ci>barangay\u003C/i> hall.  \n”Mako, let’s go to the new \u003Ci>esplanade\u003C/i> in the other \u003Ci>barrio\u003C/i> later. It’s a great place to bike!” Niko said.  \n”But \u003Ci>Nanay\u003C/i> doesn’t let me bike too far away. Especially if it will make me late in getting home. She’ll scold me,” Mako replied.  \n”You don’t have to ask her. We’re not going to stay there too long. We’ll be back before night time. If you don’t come, you’ll miss  \nout. Everyone else is coming,” Niko said convincingly.  \n”Ok! I’ll see you there later!” Mako agreed, and quickly rode his bike home.\u003Ci>esplanade\u003C/i>: promenade \u003Ci>barrio\u003C/i>: neighborhood \u003Ci>nanay\u003C/i>: mother  \nMako paced back and forth in the kitchen while his mother cooked. But he couldn’t bring himself to ask his mother if he could to go to the esplanade. He really wanted to go with Niko and all their friends. Everytime he looked at his bicycle, it seemed like it was inviting him to ride it. He knew deep inside that his mother wouldn’t let him go if he asked.  \n”Mako, could you please buy cooking oil from  \nthe market. Please hurry, because I need to use it to fry the fish for dinner,” his mother said.  \n”Okay, Nanay!”Mako replied.  \nWhile Mako was riding to the market he remembered what Niko told him, that only he’d be missing from the fun if he didn’t come . So instead of going to the market, he went straight to esplanade.  \n”Since I’m such a fast biker,” he thought, ”I’ll be back soon and I’ll still have time to buy the cooking oil.”  \nThe friends had so much fun biking on the esplanade. Other people were also having a great time walking, jogging, and riding bicycles just like them. Some people were selling food, and others were taking pictures of the beautiful sunset.  \nOh no! The sun was already setting! Mako remembered the cooking oil he needed to buy for Nanay. He’d been having so much that he didn’t notice the time.  \n”Oh no! It’s already getting dark! Nanay willscold me!” Mako worried.  \n”Let’s race to the barangay hall so that we can get home quickly. Whoever gets there first wins,” challenged Niko .  \nEverybody rode their bikes fast, except Mako . He purposely slowed down so that he could turn onto a different route that was a shortcut. It was a bit steep and narrow, but it was a lot shorter.  \n”Yes!
