It explains how to create simple hives from locally available materials such as bamboo, leaf fibres, grasses, clay, and other plant-based options. Step-by-step instructions cover constructing entrances, arranging nest and honey-storage sections, protecting bees from pests and overheating, and making holes or doors so worker bees can enter and leave while the queen stays inside. The guide also includes printing and adaptation notes for MissionAssist materials.","Making a Beehive \nlevel: intermediate \nEnglish Agriculture \nMaking a Beehive \nWritten and illustrated for MissionAssist Scripture quotations taken from The Holy Bible, New International Version® NIV® Copyright © 1973 1978 1984 2011 by Biblica, Inc. Samson found a swarm of bees in the body of a dead lion (a strong animal) . He took the honey from the bees and shared it with his mother and father. It was delicious! \nWould you like to have honey for yourself and your family? You do not need a dead lion for this! You can make a simple beehive from many different materials: clay, cement, plastic, bamboo, or by weaving together fibres from banana or palm leaves, or reeds or grasses. \nHere is a picture of a hive made by weaving leaf fibres together. \nAnd here is a picture of a hive made by weaving grasses together. \nHang your hive on a tree branch to protect the bees from pests. This will also help to keep the bees cool. \nBamboo is popular with wild bees for their nests. You can also use it to make a hive for your own bees. Take a thick stem of bamboo, with a diameter of about 100-150 mm, and cut apiece 4 sections long. Then cut 4 doors in the underside of the stem, as shown in the picture. You can open these doors to check on the bees, but normally they are shut. Make slits in the doors so that the bees can always pass through them. \nThe 2 central sections form the nest, where the queen bee lays her eggs and the young bees grow up. The queen bee is bigger than the worker bees and stays inside the hive. You can join the central sections together by cutting out the inside of the stem at this point. \nThen drill small holes of 6-10 mm in the 2 end sections to allow the worker bees (but not the queen) to go in and out ","cbCairMx1X3MwE60","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCairMx1X3MwE60","pdf",422736,4,1,17,"English","en",105,"# Making a Beehive\n## Honey in the Bible\n## Choosing materials\n## Bamboo hive (two-part structure)\n## Leaf-fibre hive (separate honey part)\n## Clay-pot hive (base and top pots)\n## Placement and care for bees","[{\"question\":\"Why does the guide mention honey and the Bible?\",\"answer\":\"It uses a Bible quote to explain that the “something sweet” is honey, then shows how bees can provide honey without needing the story’s dead lion.\"},{\"question\":\"What materials can be used to make a beehive?\",\"answer\":\"The guide suggests many options, including clay, cement, plastic, bamboo, and woven leaf fibres or grasses (such as banana or palm leaves, reeds, or grasses).\"},{\"question\":\"How should the hive be designed to help beehives stay functional and bees stay cool?\",\"answer\":\"It recommends protecting the hive by hanging it on a tree branch, providing entrances that allow worker bees to pass while the queen remains inside, and shielding the hive from direct sunlight to help maintain a cool environment.\"}]","Making a Beehive -
