Under the pressure of wartime scarcity, the story moves into a sewing factory where women maintain machines, endure noise and fabric fumes, and follow assigned tasks that turn labor into routine and boredom. Friendship with Bethan and Maisie anchors humor and resilience as the day unfolds.","MAKE DO AND MEND ON PETTICOAT \nLANE \nPATRICIA MCBRIDE \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nFor my mother, Joyce Johnson, and for the East End she remembered – a place of hardship, humour, and people who never gave up \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nCONTENTS \nChapter 1 \nChapter 2 \nChapter 3 \nChapter 4 \nChapter 5 \nChapter 6 \nChapter 7 \nChapter 8 \nChapter 9 \nChapter 10 \nChapter 11 \nChapter 12 \nChapter 13 \nChapter 14 \nChapter 15 \nChapter 16 \nChapter 17 \nChapter 18 \nChapter 19 \nChapter 20 \nChapter 21 \nChapter 22 \nChapter 23 \nChapter 24 \nChapter 25 \nChapter 26 \nChapter 27 \nChapter 28 \nChapter 29 \nChapter 30 \nChapter 31 \nChapter 32 \nChapter 33 \nChapter 34 \nChapter 35 \nChapter 36 \nChapter 37 \nChapter 38 \nChapter 39 \nChapter 40 \nChapter 41 \nChapter 42 \nChapter 43 \nChapter 44 \nChapter 45 \nChapter 46 \nAcknowledgements \nThank you! \nMore From Patricia McBride \nAbout the Author \nAlso by Patricia McBride \nSixpence Stories \nAbout Boldwood Books \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \n1 \nAmanda woke before the winter dawn to the creak of the stairs and the hiss of a kettle boiling in the kitchen downstairs. Mrs Cohen always rose early, padding about the kitchen in her well-worn slippers. She loved having lodgers to look after now her children had all grown up and flown the nest. \nThe smell of weak tea drifted up the narrow staircase, mingling with the tang of coal smoke that seeped through every London wall. Amanda’s room was average size, with wallpaper faded to a ghost of roses past. A single chair stood by the bed, her coat draped over it, mended invisibly on the cuff. She turned on her little gas fire, wondering if she needed to feed the meter. It wasn’t her day for a bath; she and the other lodgers took it in turns, never using more than the five inches of water the law allowed. No, a quick lick and a promise would have to do. She hastily dressed herself ready for breakfast and turned the fire off again to save her pennies. \nJust one road away, Petticoat Lane lay muffled in fog, but even through the windows she could hear its hum. Traders setting up their stalls, vehicles unloading, costermongers calling to each other. \nShe went back into the bathroom and cleaned her teeth, looking at herself in the mirror and groaning. She really needed an early night but there was always so much to do. A knock came at the door.‘Tea’s brewed, dear,’ Mrs Cohen called. \nAmanda spat out the chilly water she’d been rinsing her teeth with.‘Won’t be a tick!’ Originally, she had just paid rent for the room but soon \ncame to an agreement that Mrs Cohen would provide a very simple breakfast for a small extra charge. It was almost always tea and toast with a scraping of marge, but sometimes there’d be an egg too. A red-letter day. \nHer landlady always wore a knitted shawl in muted shades of grey over her cardigans. Amanda thought of her as a second mother, even though she saw her mother from time to time. But her mother was a live-in carer for a confused old lady and had a cleaning job too. Between her work and Amanda’s, it was difficult to find time to see each other as often as they’d like. Her mother was happier now she’d left Amanda’s bullying father, and she looked ten years younger too. \nDownstairs, Mrs Cohen fussed as she poured tea. ‘Drink it hot, mind, you’ll need it today. Horrible it is out there.’ She turned and reached for the toast, putting it in front of Amanda with an apology,‘Sorry. I’ve run out of almost everything, but there’s a scraping of jam left.’ \nThe bread was coarse and thin, more sawdust than flour, but it filled a gap. Amanda ate it quickly, kissed her landlady on the cheek and hurried out of the door. \nThe fog clung to her coat and knitted hat as she walked along. The market was sometimes called the Petticoat, or more often the lane. Many stalls were already doing brisk business, especially the ones selling hot food and drinks.
