I am not a marine mechanic, but have been an outboarder and have done my own repairs all my life and have been a machinist forever. I document here what I have encountered, so that I can go back and read my own writings if something pops up years later. \nFor these outboard motor repair articles, I DO NOT try to give the reader a documented list of parts needed for a conversion, (as this could be different because of running changes made even within the same models), but do try to document what differences I have encountered and tricks I have learned, many of which are not listed in service manuals. \nI have also tried to break out specific areas of repairs into separate articles, however some may overlap. For these, you may see a slight duplication, but with a more complete write-up on the article more specific to that repair. \nMy articles are probably the most complete information you will find for the 9.9/15hp Johnson/Evinrude motors, however they can be extensive and dull reading for the person who has no clue as for outboard repairs. I often get inquiries, which I try to answer, however most of the time, the information requested is there, if that person would have taken the time to read farther. \nThis article covers many aspects of these series of OMC motors, but over the years it has grown to the point that I have had to split it into separate specific sections. In doing so, you will see a CLICK HERE or Yellow Highlighted underlined link that takes you to the article that is specific to what is being discussed. Some links will be to online information will have the link in an underlined blue color. \nHistory of This Series : Johnson was one division of OMC, (Outboard Motor Corp) while Evinrude was the other half. This came about by the merger of both companies in early 1956. Both brands of motors then came from the same plant after that. So what you see here that says Johnson, will also USUALLY pertain to the same equivalent Evinrude motor. Evinrude was usually painted a blue color of some sorts, while Johnson was initially green until 1977 and then again white. Late 1990's they both were either black, white or a blue gray depending on the year. OMC filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy and in October 2001, Bombardier Corp. a Canadian manufacturer that builds snow mobiles, aiplanes plus a multitude of other vehicles bought the outboard motor division. \nThe earlier Johnson 10 hp QD series motors were made from 1949 thru 1963. In 1958 these motors had a face change, utilizing a newer style motor cowling and a change in color. The 9.5 hp Johnson and Evinrude motors were made from 1964 to 1973. These 9.5 hp motor's early model number was MQ up until the model code was changed incorporating the date in 1969. If you need year of a manufacture for these motors, or any before OMC went to the year code in 1977, as described below, go to [http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/johnson/](http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/johnson/) . \nPlease excuse me for focusing on the Johnson brand, while after 1956 under the OMC manufacturer, both motors were made in the same plant, but painted a different color and sold to different dealers. It is just simpler in these articles to focus on one manufacturer, and in certain areas, there appear to be more old Johnsons floating around than Evinrudes. \n\n| 10 hp QD series 1949 to 1958 | 10 hp QD series 1959 to 1963 | 9.5 hp MQ Johnson 196","cbCaij4MPy10rFth","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaij4MPy10rFth","pdf",6885213,47,"English","# Introduction\n# History of This Series\n## Johnson vs. Evinrude under OMC\n# Motor identification and ratings\n## 9.9 vs 15 hp differences\n## RPM, piston displacement, and carburetion\n# Repair article structure and linking","[{\"question\":\"What is the scope of this part of the outboard maintenance articles?\",\"answer\":\"It focuses on the 9.9/15 hp Johnson/Evinrude OMC motors from 1974–1992, emphasizing information and normal repairs rather than a fixed conversion parts list.\"},{\"question\":\"Why does the author document differences instead of listing conversion parts?\",\"answer\":\"Running changes can occur even within the same models, so the author documents differences encountered and repair tricks learned that are often not covered in service manuals.\"},{\"question\":\"How can a 9.9 hp motor be distinguished from a 15 hp motor if the nameplate is missing?\",\"answer\":\"If cowling and name/model plate are missing, the author notes you may need to remove the carburetor and measure the inside throat to determine whether it is 9.9 or 15 hp.\"}]","Maintaining Johnson/Evinrude 9.9 - Part 1 - Information & normal repairs | PDF",1792790566,118]
