The cake for her cousin’s engagement was a three-tier, Italian cream with raspberry filling, decorated to celebrate Jane’s wedding engagement to a young man from a wealthy and important family. \nThings had not been going well. \nTwice she’d been asked to move her workspace, to make room for the loud, bad-mannered kitchen staff so they could prepare and serve the meal. The morning rain showers had kept the air heavy with moisture, causing her icing to stick so badly that she resorted to adding corn starch to try to smooth it out. \nAnd to top it all off, literally, the imported porcelain cake topper had been accidentally chipped when it fell off the dessert cart, her helper getting in a hurry to set up in the current work area, a small closet off the main kitchen. \nSmall disaster after small disaster. \nTime was running short, but Rebecca was determined to prevail. Her heart raced at the weight of her task, to satisfy the lofty expectations of Jane and her mother, Aunt Matilda. This was more than a party, after all. \nIt was Matilda’s chance to make the right impression, to show that young Mr. Winthrop had chosen wisely, and that Jane and her family were worthy of the prestige and power that surrounded the Winthrop family. Everything had to be perfect, and the cake would be the centerpiece of that perfection. \nBring it out at exactly nine o’clock, Matilda had ordered that morning. Important people always have a schedule, and we are even more important now that Jane is becoming a Winthrop. \nIt was 8:42pm. The cake should have been finished by now, but so many small things had gone wrong. None of that mattered now. She had to focus, she had to finish this cake, and it had to be beautiful. \nThe Italian-made cake topper sat on a shelf, next to several spare cake toppers that Jane had collected over the years. Rebecca had taken some of the sticky icing and used it to glue the chipped piece back in place. She said a small prayer that it would hold, then set it aside while she finished the cake. \nShe gently pushed the last of the sugar roses and petals into the middle layer, then added a few drops of milk to some icing before scooping it into the piping bag, ready to write the inscription across the bottom layer. \nShe gl","cbCaibFIsOoRmWMi","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibFIsOoRmWMi","pdf",1052640,7,177,"English","en",105,"# Chapter One – The Second Worst Part of the Evening\n# Chapter Two – Unexpected Visitors\n# Chapter Three – Goldilocks and the Chili and Cornbread\n# Chapter Four – Fine Penmanship from a Gentleman in Texas\n# Chapter Five – A Trunk Full of Gifts\n# Chapter Six – Lydia Reynolds Does Not Approve","[{\"question\":\"What major challenge does Rebecca face at the start of Chapter One?\",\"answer\":\"Rebecca must finish an engagement cake that keeps suffering small disasters, including icing problems and a chipped cake topper, while time runs out before presentation.\"},{\"question\":\"Why is the engagement cake so important to Rebecca?\",\"answer\":\"The cake represents the engagement between Jane and Mr. Winthrop and is intended to make a perfect impression for Jane and Aunt Matilda, becoming the centerpiece of the celebration.\"},{\"question\":\"What happens when a young man interrupts Rebecca while she prepares the final inscription?\",\"answer\":\"The door bursts open and the young man loudly asks if he should take the cake, causing Rebecca to jump and nearly upset it, forcing Gwen to send him away.\"}]","Mail Order Rebecca -
