The discussion emphasizes how recognizing life’s irrationality can be more realistic than ignoring it, and how Latin American writers expanded the form globally from the 1960s onward. They love to depict the mundane, everyday world we know all too well—but then they inject it with some fantasy as if fantasy were the most normal thing in the world. \nOpen up a Magic Realist novel, for example, and sure, you'll find lots of descriptions of regular people just like you and me doing everyday, regular things like washing the dishes, setting the snooze button the alarm, and Shmooping Magic Realism. But turn the page, and these same people are likely to grow wings and fly, or turn into an animal, or move between the world of the living and between the world of the dead. \nMagic Realism is defined by contradiction. On the one hand, it draws on the Realist tradition in literature, which was all about depicting the world as we see it, with all its everyday details and all its many problems. But on the other hand, Magic Realism fills this Realist world with the fantastic, the extraordinary, and the supernatural. It's a literary movement that jumbles together the fantastic and the mundane, and by doing so, it shows how life, even at its most trivial, can get pretty fantastic pretty quickly. \n2 \nAfter all, life can be pretty weird now and then, right? Sometimes just acknowledging that weirdness is more realistic than pretending it doesn't exist. \nWhile Magic Realism has its roots in older literary movements like Realism, it only really exploded on a global scale beginning in the 1960s, when a number of Latin American writers began pushing the envelope by challenging the bounds of what we consider to be reality—often with political as well as artistic aims. Don't think fantasy can be political? Read on to find out how these magicians did it. \nWhy Should I Care? \nCome on, admit it: there's a tiny part of you that believes in magic, are we right? Hey, we're not gonna judge, and neither are our Magic Realist writers. One of the points of Magic Realism is to remind us that when you get right down to it, there's a lot in life that's just plain irrational. Life is full of the fantastic and the unknown; we just get wrapped up in our everyday lives that we often miss this. \nAs a literary movement, Magic Realism embraces this irrational dimension of life. Hey, they say, who's to tell us that ghosts don't exist? Or that there aren't people who can fly? After all, anything's possible, right? The fact that humans evolved out of a tiny single cell billions of years ago is itself pretty magical. So who knows what else can happen? \nMAGIC REALISM TOP 10 LIST \n(1) The Fantastic \nThe fantastic is anything that bends the rules of reality as we know it. Ghosts, flying people, magic, talking animals—that sort of stuff doesn't happen in reality (okay, as far as we know), but it's always just around the corner in Magic Realism. \n(2) The Mundane \n3 \nThe mundane is the opposite of the fantastic. It's the everyday stuff: sleeping, eating, family, work. So maybe it's not the most exciting stuff to read about, but it totally heightens the sense of realism you get when you're reading a story or a novel. \n(3) Matter-of-Fact Narrative Style \nMagic Realist writers often use a deadpan, even voice, without a lot of fancy, flowery language—even when what they're talking about is out of this world. For example, they might describe someone growing wings and flying away as if it were the most normal, everyday thing in the world. \n(4) Hybridity \nHybridity basically means mixing it up. In the case of Magic Realism, what we're talking about is the way these writers mix up reality with fantasy, fact with fiction, the mundane with the extraordinary. \n(5) Time \nMagic Realist writers do some weird things with time. In Magic Realist literature, time may be circular instead of linear, or it could j","cbCaisAlFjLTxgfW","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisAlFjLTxgfW","pdf",256586,37,"English","# MAGIC REALISM - Top 10 List\n## The Fantastic\n## The Mundane\n## Matter-of-Fact Narrative Style\n## Hybridity\n## Time\n## Incorporation of Myths\n## Political Critique\n## Latin American Boom\n## Surrealism\n## Novel and Short Story","[{\"question\":\"What defines Magic Realism in literature?\",\"answer\":\"Magic Realism is defined by contradiction: it blends Realist depictions of everyday life with fantastic, extraordinary, and supernatural events presented as normal.\"},{\"question\":\"How do Magic Realist writers handle ordinary reality and fantasy together?\",\"answer\":\"They mix the mundane with the extraordinary, often combining reality and fantasy, fact and fiction, so everyday life becomes swiftly and convincingly fantastic.\"},{\"question\":\"What are key features listed in the Magic Realism Top 10?\",\"answer\":\"The list highlights items such as the fantastic, the mundane, a matter-of-fact narrative style, hybridity, altered time, incorporation of myths, political critique, the Latin American boom, links to surrealism, and the novel/short story as core genres.\"}]","MAGIC REALISM - Top 10 List - Overview | PDF",1789942225,57]
