No. : LM-503-05-18E \nFOREWORD \nThe Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship (CCDA) recognizes this Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS) as the Red Seal standard for the Machinist trade. \nBackground \nThe first National Conference on Apprenticeship in Trades and Industries, held in Ottawa in 1952, recommended that the federal government be requested to cooperate with provincial and territorial apprenticeship committees and officials in preparing analyses of a number of skilled occupations. Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) sponsors the Red Seal Program, which, under the guidance of the CCDA, develops a national occupational standard for each of the Red Seal trades. \nStandards have the following objectives: \n• to describe and group the tasks performed by skilled workers; \n• to identify which tasks are performed in every province and territory; \n• to develop instruments for use in the preparation of Interprovincial Red Seal Examinations and assessment tools for apprenticeship and certification authorities; \n• to develop common tools for apprenticeship on-the-job and technical training in Canada; \n• to facilitate the mobility of apprentices and skilled workers in Canada; \n• to supply employers, employees, associations, industries, training institutions and governments with occupational standards. \nAny questions, comments, or suggestions for changes, corrections, or revisions to this standard or any of its related products may be forwarded to: \nTrades and Apprenticeship Division \nApprenticeship and Regulated Occupations Directorate \nEmployment and Social Development Canada \n140 Promenade du Portage, Phase IV, 6th Floor \nGatineau, Quebec K1A 0J9 \nEmail: [redseal-sceaurouge@hrsdc-rhdcc.gc.ca](redseal-sceaurouge@hrsdc-rhdcc.gc.ca) \nACKNOWLEDGEMENTS \nThe CCDA and ESDC wish to express sincere appreciation for the contribution of the many tradespersons, industrial establishments, professional associations, labour organizations, provincial and territorial government departments and agencies, and all others who contributed to this publication. \nSpecial thanks are offered to the following representatives who contributed greatly to the original draft of the standard and provided expert advice throughout its development: \nMarte Arreola Grant Callies \nDugald Carter Jennifer Dahl \nErwin Dyck Darrel Evely Ian Feys Corey Gushue Mike Hall \nAlan Hemphill \nStan Jacklin Samuel Jahn Chris Keefe \nMarc Landry \nMario Luburic John Palmer \nBenoit Paquette Terry Pederson Bert Sonier \nWolfgang Theiss Ron Yurkowski \nBritish Columbia Alberta Manitoba Alberta Saskatchewan \nNewfoundland and Labrador \nManitoba New Brunswick British Columbia Nova Scotia \nNova Scotia \nBritish Columbia Newfoundland and Labrador \nNew Brunswick Ontario \nPrince Edward Island Ontario Saskatchewan New Brunswick Ontario \nManitoba \nThis standard was prepared by the Apprenticeship and Regulated Occupations Directorate of ESDC.
