Johansen  \nOctober 5, 2023  \nDepartment of Economics University of Southern Denmark  \nSupervisor: Christian Møller Dahl, University of Southern Denmark  \nCo-supervisor: Miriam Wüst, University of Copenhagen  \nPreface  \nToday marks a milestone for projects spanning more than five years and 20 co-authors, with topics ranging from machine learning to economics and healthcare. Adding all others who have played pivotal roles and without whom I would never have been able to complete my thesis – be it colleagues, friends, or family – extends the list considerably.  \nI started studying economics due to an interest in political science mixed with some desire for using mathematics to help us understand complex social issues. I understood why statistics was an important tool, but I was convinced I wouldn’t find it particularly interesting. That changed, however, and particularly regression analysis, at the time taught by Christian Møller Dahl, ignited my interest for econometrics and later machine learning. Much of what followed was no surprise: I wrote my bachelor thesis with Christian as my supervisor, started working with him as a research assistant, and ultimately became his PhD-student. Throughout, I have benefited tremendously from his guidance, and I have appreciated his approach to collaboration: From the very get-go, I have always felt like a complete equal – which, at times, also has been somewhat scary – something which has impressed me time and again; I have always been given the freedom to pursue the projects I found interesting, the support I needed, and the help in navigating challenges of the PhD.  \nComprised of six research papers, this thesis owes much to the dedicated and exceptional work of my co-authors: Jennifer L. Baker, Lise G. Bjerregaard, Christian M. Dahl, Emil N. Sørensen, Thorkild I. A. Sørensen, Christian E. Westermann, Simon F. Wittrock, and Miriam Wüst. I have been fortunate in working with such excellent researchers. While not a co-author of any paper of my thesis, I cannot omit Mads U. Werner from this list, who beyond his valuable role as a co-author also has played – and continues to play – an enormous role in helping me through the recovery after the removal of a tumor from my spinal cord.  \nBeyond my co-authors, I have been fortunate in being surrounded by kind and smart colleagues at University of Southern Denmark, as well as during my research stay at Stanford.
