This model is an image classifier designed to identify the type of classical composition present in landscape paintings. After several tests and various modifications, the image classifier achieved around 50% accuracy on images within its dataset. For images outside of the dataset the model’s results were 65% accuracy on an easier image and 15% accuracy on amore difficult image. This renders the model impractical for educational purposes and raises questions as to how current machine learning techniques in the art world could be improved by more accurate aesthetic evaluation.  \nMachine Learning Driven Composition Identification for Art Education  \nRecent advancements in machine learning technologies have led to an increased interest in using machine learning models for art-related tasks. Originally, machine learning models were used to classify artworks based on style or artists (Cetinic & She, 2022) . But recently models have emerged that can generate new artworks based on prompts from a user. Both types of models have various applications in the art industry, with several new use cases being made possible through the recent development of generative models (Cetinic & She, 2022) . The purpose of this thesis is to create an art identification algorithm for identifying art composition. This identification algorithm could be used for educational purposes and may also show the potential for identifying more abstract elements of artworks with machine learning models.  \nBackground  \nIn order to understand these models, it is important to understand the concept of machine learning. Machine learning is a specific branch of artificial intelligence where an algorithm is trained from data in order to predict the answer to a question based on what it has been trained from (Bell, 2022). Recently machine learning models have been used to create artworks by training them on labeled images of artist’s artworks and then querying them to create an image based offa specific text prompt which uses those labels (Das & Varshney, 2022; Franceschelli & Musolesi, 2022; Htun & Zln, 2020) . These models are capable of making amazing artworks, but they have several potential flaws. One of the biggest possible faults is that they are not trained to understand the artworks they are creating (Wojciechowski & Kristiina, 2021) . Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to explore how to train a machine learning model to identify aesthetics more clearly in works of art (McCormack & Lomas, 2020). This is not just for research purposes  \nhowever, as such a model could be helpful in training students who are learning how to produce their own compositions.  \nFurthermore, it is important to discuss Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and in particular Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to help provide background for this project. ANNs are a specific type of machine learning model that uses a network of neurons meant to mimic the human brain (O’Shea & Nash, 2015) . Inputs are passed into an input layer, that then passes them to a number of hidden layers. The weighted links between these layers is what eventually produces a result to the output layer.
