While learning machines are increasingly adopted, the mechanisms through which ML developments foster organizational learning remain insufficiently understood. The study explores these effects through interviews with 42 experts engaged in ML developments. Results indicate ML developments can strengthen multiple organizational learning processes, generating both explicit and tacit knowledge.","Association for Information Systems \nAIS Electronic Library (AISeL) \nRising like a Phoenix: Emerging from the \nPandemic and Reshaping Human Endeavors Governance, Digital Strategy, and Value \nwith Digital Technologies ICIS 2023 \nDec 11th, 12:00 AM \nMachine Learning Developments as Stimuli for Organizational Learning \nOliver A. As organizations increasingly adopt machine learning (ML) systems in their routines, the need to illuminate the impact of learning machines on organizational learning processes becomes increasingly urgent. In particular, due to their highly interdisciplinary and collaborative nature, ML developments—as organizations’activities aimed at creating productively usable ML systems—may hereby represent an important but not yet well understood mechanism for fostering organizational learning. To explore how ML developments affect organizational learning processes, we interviewed 42 experts who are frequently involved in ML developments. Our findings suggest that ML developments can enhance organizational learning by stimulating a variety of organizational learning processes that generate a wealth of explicit and tacit knowledge in organizations. \nKeywords: Organizational learning, machine learning, development, knowledge, tacit, explicit \nIntroduction \nOrganizational learning lies at the heart of organizational behavior because it represents the process by which organizations continually (re)define their norms, innovations, and routines (e.g., Argote & MironSpektor, 2011; Levitt & March, 1988) .
