REVISION: MACBETH’S CHARACTER \nMacbeth, the cousin of an old, benevolent, and venerable king is introduced to us as a general of extraordinary prowess, who has covered himself in glory by putting down a rebellion and repelling the invasion of a foreign army. In his battles with the invading Norwegian s and their allies (led by the traitor, the‘merciless Mac Don wald’) Mac beth is u neq u ivoca l a n d bloody. He d is p lays extraordinary personal courage and this courage is matched by an astonishing level of violence . The first thing we hear about him, well before he enters, is that he is drenched in blood and has slit someone open from the‘nave to the chops’: \nall's too weak: \nFor brave Macbeth – well he deserves that name – \nDisdaining fortune , with his brandish'd steel, \nWhich smoked with bloody execution, \nLike valour's minion carved out his passage \nTill he faced the slave; \nWhich ne'er s hook hands , nor bade farewell to him, \nTill he unseam'd him from the nave to the chops , \nAnd fix'd his head upon our battlements. \nIn fact, it quickly becomes apparent that Macbeth’s social status comes from his effectiveness as a bloody and violent warrior. Duncan underscores the sense of respect and admiration the audience feels for this brave soldier when he describes him as ‘valiant’ and ‘worthy’. If all this were not enough, the sergeant continues his narrative of Macbeth and Banquo’s exploits, informing us that they managed to re pel a counter attack by the Norwegian king himself. It would seem that the day was won by the hard work, determination and unflinching courage of Macbeth and Banquo . So, how doe s a man who is viewed by everyone as a hero fall so low as to be described at the end of the play as, variously, a ‘hell hound’,‘black Macbeth’ and a ‘fiend of Scotland’? It is this tension between the potential for greatness that the audience witnesses at the outset of the play and \nShakespeare’s depiction of Macbeth’s horrifying crimes that makes this play just so fasc i nat i ng . I n fact , Macbeth’s ho no u rable a nd co u rageo us defe nce of h is country intensifies the feelings of sympathy we will later come to feel for him . \nOne of the most interesting aspects of Macbeth’s downfall is just how q u ickly he fa lls from g race .
