Faced with a run-down cottage, encroaching weeds, and the need to repair the property, the story balances practical survival work with hints of tension in the surrounding estate life. The narrative emphasizes self-reliance, rebuilding routines, and the arrival of new responsibilities as the journey’s first chapter begins.","LURED BY HIS RESERVE \nENCHANTED SEASONS TRILOGY BOOK 1: SPRING \nBy Arven Vallén \nCopyright © Arven Vallén 2026. \nAll rights reserved. The garden besieging it is in a state of overgrowth that makes me second-guess my possibilities of surviving the winter on the harvest from my own vegetable patch. Fortunately, dandelions are edible. Nettles, too, if one’s mouth is lined with steel. \nI turn my attention from the first permanent residence I have had since childhood to the surrounding area. I had hoped to settle down farther away from civilization, but finding an isolated estate in a livable condition turned out to be too much to ask within the borders of the realm. \nAt least Lachlin, a village named by its location, is as far away from the capital as one can get without crossing the border of Rockmere. It is huddled in the armpit of a conifer forest that crests the northern bank of Lake Linian, looking slumbery enough to convince me that I have not compromised my yearning for quietude too far. Besides, the magnificent view I have over the lake to the snowcapped mountains in the west makes up for the closeness of a settlement. \nI would consider this a perfect location for my retirement home if the nearest neighbor were not only a stone’s throw away. At least, I suppose there is a cottage amidst the profusion of greenery that lies on the opposite side of the road, just far enough north from my place not to block my view of the lake when I sit on the porch. \nJust like mine, the neighbor ’s estate is surrounded by a high fence. Only theirs is not leaning in every possible direction at once and covered in lichen. It is straight, sturdy, and coated in fresh, green paint. \nMine will be just like it by midsummer, I decide. Only higher and more solid. \nMonster casts an incredulous look at me as I jump down from the driver ’s seat and struggle to open the gate that droops on rusty hinges. \n“Come,” I urge, tugging lightly on the reins.“It doesn’t look like much, I know, but it’s ours.” \nThe axles creak as my loyal companion in countless battles, now demoted as a draught, draws the cart into the front yard. The nettles reach as high as my elbows, and the scent of dandelions is so thick I can taste their nectar on my tongue. The warhorse shakes his head, his expression even more sour than when I presented him to the harness and poles for the first time.
