But I couldn’t let it deter me as I slipped through the grungy alleys. The main streets were too dangerous right now for someone like me, and so I avoided the neon-lit paths. I had to find someone. I had to find her.  \nViper. Known for her grave robbing, murdering of elites, and mugging of the poor, there wasn’t anyone or anything off-limits to her. And she was perfect for what I needed.  \nI pulled my hood over my head. Partly to save my hair from the rain but mostly to hide my identity. I was an elite married an even bigger elite, and I needed out of this sham of a marriage. There were no benefits for me. He was abusive—verbally and physically—and he wasn’t faithful. Why should I stand for it, then? Because my family wanted to improve their standing with their political buddies? Forget that! I’d rather rot in the sandy dunes before that bastard touches me again.  \nBut where I needed to go to escape this was far away. Two weeks’ worth of traveling. To Keta. A city where I could start over. I had enough money saved to hire the notorious criminal to escort me. To protect me from other criminals. And then I’d have just enough to begin a new life. Free and in my control.  \nMy stomach ached from the madness of my life. No one in my family wanted to help. My parents refused, my siblings turned a blind eye, and  \neven my grandparents didn’t care. It hurt to think about it. All I wanted was to be happy, to have a loving marriage. Had I known this was what they had planned since my birth, I would’ve run away ages ago. But I tried to remind myself of the good that was coming. Just a few more weeks.  \n“You lost?” a hissy voice called out. A man slouched against the doorframe of an apartment building with a drink in hand. He looked me over, but he didn’t seem interested that way.  \n“I’m looking for someone,” I said, slowing my step.“Viper? The—”“I know the name,” he snapped, his voice slurring.“Why in the …world would you want to go messing w …with her? Death wish?”  \nI crossed my arms, huffing. On the inside, I trembled with fear. But I couldn’t let him or anyone see it.“Just tell me where she’s at.”  \nTelling him anything about me could get me killed. I was in an area where someone of my status was a walking mark. I kept my face hidden under a scarf, only letting the man see my eyes. My bag of money and jewels remained deep in my satchel, and even my nice clothes stayed hidden under my coat.  \nThe man clicked his tongue, shaking his bald head before pointing down the alley with his drink.“She usually hangs out at the Drowned Maiden Tavern. Good luck, you’re …going to need it.”  \nI shivered, nodding and heading toward the tavern by the large river. Lightning showed the jagged mountains on the horizon scraping the cloudy sky, and the rain became heavier. Hurrying through the shady crowd, I found the rundown tavern with a half-working neon sign hanging above it. Inside the wooden and metal place, the occupants were clearly in survival mode rather than thriving. I took in the décor, wincing at the interesting themes—fishing nets, stuffed animal heads, and underwear and bras.  \nCigar and hookah smoke hovered over me, and the foul scent of blood, piss, and puke assaulted me.
