reconstruc its scenes,to revive its echoes, and kindle with pale gleamsthe passion of former days.\" \nWinston Churchill,November 1940. \nFify years ofter Friday,25h Oclober 1940 it is with history that thisbooklet is concerned. In it an attempt is made to reconstruct a picture ofthe evenls of that evening,to hear the echoes of those involved, and torekindle the emolion and passion of these bygone days. \nIt is dedicated to the thousands of ordinary men, women and children inlitle fowns and villages up and down the country who suddenly foundthemselves in the front line, albeit as civilians, during the Second WorldWar.Sadly, many of them did not survive. Some of us who did, feel thatit is imporlant to put on record some of the minor incidents of these yearswhich nonetheless were signilicant and traumatic for the individual peopleinvolved. \nThe principal bases from whlch Luftwaffe aircraft operated over the east coastof Scotland-Sylt(Germany,Aalborg(Denmark)and Stavangex(Norway). \n# 2.A PERSONAL MEMORY\n\nIt hod been a good, sunny, autumn day.The \"tatties\"were being lifed in thefields but everybody was back now from work and it was dusk, opproachingseven o'clock. My sisters,Margaret, aged seven, and Morag, almost three, and I laged 12)were playing in the front room of our two-roomed ground floorhouse af 11 Rodger Street,Cellardyke,in the East Neuk of File on the shoresof the Firth of Forth. The street consisted of two rows of three-storeyedterraced houses, built for fishermen out of solid stone. \nSuddenly I heard a heavy\"crump\"in the disiance.I jumped up and ran intothe inside passage and looked out the front door. There were more loud bangsand the roar of aeroplane engines approaching fast and very low.I ran backinto the house,shouting\"Quick,the Germans are comingl\".'We knew what to doin the event of an air raid.We didn't have any shelters in Cellardyke (afteroll,it was only a little fishing village),but my father had made the back \nroom (a bedroom)as secure as possible ogainst bomb blast by laying seven oreight heavy wooden beams upright across the window outside.(ln
